Enoch Powell is one of the most
controversial political figures of recent
history . While best known for his views on
immigration and the famous speech of 1968
which led to his dismissal from Edward
Heath’s Conservative Shadow Cabinet, he
has had a diverse and tempestuous career.
Powell was born in Birmingham in 1 9 1
during a thunderstorm. After Cambridge
he embarked on an academic career,
becoming the youngest professor in the
Commonwealth, teaching Classics at
Sydney University. He is the author of
several significant studies of Greek classics,
and of volumes of poetry.
After serv ing in the Army during World
War II and in r 944 becoming its youngest
brigadier, Powell began his political career
in the Conservative Party. Because of his
often unorthodox views he had a difficult
rise after being elected IV1P for
Wolverhampton South-West in 1(950. He
served as IVIinister of Health in the early
1 960s.
I Iis 1 968 speech was to change the face
of British politics and irrevocably alter his
own career. Despite his dismissal from the
Shadow Cabinet he has remained an
influential force, both in and out of
Parliament. Indeed, it has been said that he
won the 1 970 election for the Eories, and
lost the February^ 1 974 election for them
when he offered his famous advice to the
electorate to vote Labour. Brom 1(974 until
x 987 Powell serv ed as MP for Ulster’s
South Down constituency. A great orator,
he has spoken on a wide range of issues;
defence policy, the EEC, immigration and
the Irish question among them.
With Enoch Powell’s blessing and co-
operation, Patrick Cosgrave has written a
powerful biography of an essentially private
man whose incisiv e mind and power with
words have made him a figure of national
