George Washington,
Schwartz, was neither brilliant nor self-confident,
and his experience (which did not include leadership
of large armies) was not precisely suited to the
needs of his time
were at least as well endowed with talent and charm
as he. Yet before a single shot was fired under Wash-
ington s command, America had begun to transform
the man into a unifying, larger-than-life legend. How
can this adulation be explained?

ship itself, Schwartz concludes, one that accounts
for the creation of a particularly American kind of
national hero.
In this first sustained history of America s venera¬
tion of George Washington—published to coincide
with the bicentennial of the Constitutional Conven¬
tion—Schwartz probes the distinctive shape of our
national vision and illuminates the process by which
Americans made hero worship safe for democracy—
and made Washington the symbol of America s moral
sentiments for centuries to come.
Washington, an essentially modest man, differs so
dramatically from the classic charismatic hero later
described by Carlyle, Nietzsche, and Weber, that his
elevation to national icon provokes intriguing ques¬
tions about the distinctiveness of American culture
and society. Schwartz holds that the young Republic
felt a grave political ambivalence: a profound respect
for political leaders and an equally deep suspicion of
the power these leaders possessed.
Washington won people s hearts, Schwartz shows,
because he satisfied the new Republic s peculiar con¬
ception of the model leader: the man who distin¬
guishes himself not by feats performed to acquire
power, but by the lengths he goes to avoid power
and by the enthusiasm with which he relinquishes it.
Demonstrating how a strong national sentiment
emerged around Washington s popular image,
Schwartz describes the ceremonial observances
(placenames in his honor, commemorations of his
birth and death) and the rich iconography that are
evidence of the Washington cult. By examining the
moral characteristics attributed to Washington,
Schwartz reveals the deeply held values of revolu¬
tionary America as well as those which remain cen¬
tral to our democratic culture todav.
Until now, an analysis of America s love affair with
George Washington was one of the significant un¬
written stories in American history. This brilliant ex¬
ploration fills the void left by myriad biographies on
the man America has consistently idealized; the man
who continues to endure as the national paragon of
political virtue.
BARRY SCHWARTZ is a professor of sociology at
the University of Georgia. The author of three pre¬
vious books, he has written numerous articles for
American Sociological Review, American Journal of
Sociology, Review of Politics, and other professional
journals.
