Zusammenfassung: | "The Capital Times has always been a progressive newspaper, but even more important than its progressivism has been its embrace of the role of a free and independent press. Founded by William T. Evjue in 1917 to defend Robert M. La Follette's opposition to World War I, The Capital Times opposed militarism and the military-industrial complex in the most dangerous and difficult of times. It has from its founding developed and maintained a critique of corporate power and monopolies that is rooted in the Midwestern tradition of distrusting concentrated economic and political power. Over the years, The Capital Times has wrestled with how to adapt this vision to the moment - and it has often been at odds with the political currents of the moment. There have been times when The Capital Times has seemed old-fashioned, even nostalgic; yet, in recent years it's stances have been celebrated and embraced by young activists in the Occupy Movement and by national figures such as Bernie Sanders - who calls The Capital Times "may be the only daily newspaper that actually gets it." And while The Capital Times has always had a national and international vision, it remains a newspaper rooted in its place. The Capital Times has believed, throughout its history, that Wisconsin has something to teach America and the world. The Cap Times has survived 100 years, a rare accomplishment in the newspaper game"-- |
