Abstract
ABSTRACT
Religion and Law in the contemporary Russia
In the monograph written by sociologist Dr Roman Lunkin and lawyer
Inna Zagrebina analyzed the Russian way to the freedom of conscience —
from the atheism to the «Yarovaya» Law that passed through State Duma
in June 201 6 and restricted all public activity of religious organizations.
The authors analyzed the religious policy in Russia and the
development of Russian legislation and the features of mass conscience
and perception of the faith in post-soviet period and especially in 2000s
and 2010s. Generally that period touches the presidency of Vladimir
Putin (he was a prime-minister in 2008-2012 when the president was
Dmitry Medvedev).
The book helps to understand the present and future role of religious
organizations in the growing and strengthening of the civil society in Russia
in the frames of the social and political transformations in the country
from the post-soviet atheism to modernity. Roman Lunkin concluded that
in Russian society there are two factors that paradoxically overlapped —
the secularly, private faith and significant ideological role of religion
and respect to religion.
Roman Lunkin and Inna Zagrebina touched also the place of new
religious movements and missions, their features, in the context of the
religious policy of the state and interreligious dialogue. The focus of
authors — the society where prevails the religious diversity.
The special attention paid in the book to the crucial moment in the
history of the religious freedom and the legislation in Russia in 2016.
The authors try t evaluate the perspectives of the implementation of the
anti-terrorist Law known more as the «Yarovaya» Law. This Law put under
control of the state ail missionary activity of religious organizations — in
fact all public actions of groups or individuals. As the anti-extremist Law
of 2002 was guided to the control of activity of the muslim movements —
the «Yarovaya» Law directs against evangelical churches, groups,
missions.
In the connection with that in the book analyzed the practice of
the legal implementation of new legislation, the paradoxes of Russian

perception of religion and different churches, mythe and fears of Russian
society.
The book «On the way to the freedom of conscience: from the atheism
to «Yarovaya» Law» based on some materials that was already published
on a web-site of the information and analytical Center «SOVA» (head —
Aleksandr Verkhovskiy) on the special page «Religion in a secular
society» (http://www.sova-center.ru/religion/) and on a web-portal
of Slavic Center for Law and Justice «Religion and Law» (www.sclj.
ru). The articles on religious situation written by Roman Lunkin were
also prepared using the resources of the Woodrow Wilson Center for
International Scholars (Washington, DC) where Roman Lunkin worked
as a Public Policy Scholar.
The book designed for the broad circles of the readers that interested
in religion, in the role of religious institutions in the contemporary society
and Church-State relations. Also that book is a practical guide for the
representatives of the state administrations specialized on the relations
with the religious organizations, for the students, post-graduates, social
scientists, lawyers.
