Weltgesundheitsorganisation

Südseite der WHO-Zentrale in Genf Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (, kurz WHO oder , kurz OMS) ist eine Sonderorganisation der Vereinten Nationen mit Sitz in Genf. Die Praxis der Organisation ist die Koordination des internationalen öffentlichen Gesundheitswesens. Sie wurde am 7. April 1948 gegründet, proklamierte das Recht auf Gesundheit als Grundrecht des Menschen und zählt heute 194 Mitgliedstaaten. Sie wird vom WHO-Generaldirektor geleitet, seit Juli 2017 ist das der Äthiopier Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Die Verfassung der Weltgesundheitsorganisation legt als Ziel die Verwirklichung des bestmöglichen Gesundheitsniveaus bei allen Menschen fest. Hauptaufgaben sind die Bekämpfung von Erkrankungen mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf Infektionskrankheiten sowie Förderung der allgemeinen Gesundheit der Menschen weltweit. Veröffentlicht in Wikipedia
