Summary
Gustav Viitmann’s Experience from the Great European War 1914—1918
The present publication represents edited and commented original description of
events experienced and written by Estoinan soldier Gustav Viitmann (1890-1971)
who was taken from Estonia to Imperial Russian compulsory Army service in 1912
and was sent to serve to Siberia and Mongolia (2nd Siberian Rifle Corps, 20nd Siberian
Rifle Regiment). Author starts his detailed story with the news coming from Europe to
Asia in his service location near Ulanbaatar about outbreak of war in Europe.
Among the subunits of 2nd Siberian Rifle Corps the author arrives in early
November 1914 to the theater of war in Poland where he followingly participates un-
der the command of 2nd Russian Army in combat operations near Lodz. As the in-
itial manoeuvres soon turn to position warfare here at the end of 1914 author finds
himself and his comrades at the position on Rawka river. Following activities on the
borders of East Prussia take author with 2nd Siberian Army Corps to area North-West
of Warsaw, near Przasnysz where he got wounded by shrapnel in the early March 1915
and was evacuated thereafter to Moscow for medical treatment. During the stay in
rear he also got possibility for short vaccation and visited home by trains. In May 1915
Gustav Viitmann returned to front service in his regiment former location in Poland,
near Przasnysz. The Units of 2nd Siberian Rifle Corps were located at that time in the
reserve of the 1st Russian Army. Coming from the failures of Russian Army in South-
Western Front in May 1915 in Galicia, the II Siberian Corps and its subunits were
sent from the reserve of Russian North-Western front in June 1915 to Lublin front.
The Author was promoted to corporal rank here in the position of squad command-
er. During the offensive operations of German 11th Army in July 1915 committed
between Lublin and Chelm in direction of Brest-Litovsk, the author fell to enemy

hands as a prisoner-of-war in the last week of July 1915. His imprisonment passed first
in the Lublin area and from the 1916 on as a Austrian POW in Tomaszow-Lubelsk
POW camp. After the approval of Brest-Litovsk Treaty between Central Powers and
Bolshevik Russia, the story writer with a small group of comrades decided to leave
illegaly towards home in April 1918. Travelling by nights and hiding during day-time
they were successful travelling by foot through Eastern-Poland and Western-Ukraine.
Crossing succesfully the former frontline-area the author and his associates had possi-
bility to travel on by rail from the Germans occupied Ukraine to Red Russia. As most
of Viitmanns Siberians coprades turned east from Moscow he now turned towards
Petrograd direction by rail and decided by acquired information to cross the home-
land border through Germans occupied Pskov, where he also succeeded. Travelling by
foot and on occasional horse carridges as a co-traveller he arrived at home in Central
Estonia in the beginning of May 1918, after six years in conscript service in Siberia,
engagement in WWI hostilities and imprisonment as Austrian POW in Poland.
The story written by Gustav Viitmann is unique source of military, social,
logistical and etc fields of modern history. Because notes made by author during his
travels, his war story is very detailed and precise both in space and time. Therefore
it enables for reader to follow the authors journey and experienced events date by
date and read well documented and described true (micro)history from the stand-
point of single soldier. It also gives good and detailed information for researcers of
transportation, communication and overall military logistics of WWI Eastern Front.
The author, who after arriving home soon also participated as NCO in Estonian War
of Independence (1918-1920), wrote down the story under his war-time notes quite
immediately (1920). Therefore the whole text still reflects a lot of war-time soldiers
understandings, covictions and mentality, which serves as interesting and valuable
source for those interested in broader social history of the time.
