THE ACADEMICIAN VIRGIL ȘOTROPA (1867-1954) ABSTRACT Virgil Șotropa is an emblematic personality of Năsăud. He has his roots in Romanian elite, formed in rural environment, since the second half of the 18th century, originating from a third generation of priests. Through his father, Alexandru, who was trained in juridical and church domain, Virgil Șotropa approached Romanian elite of 19th century, imposing himself as journalist, outstanding teacher in Năsăud, culture man and especially as historiographer of Năsăud leans (realms), domain from which he forwarded to posterity a masterpiece of absolute value, rewarded with his chosen as Honour Member of Romanian Academy. Though all these virtues, Virgil Șotropa hasn’t enjoyed a monographical study yet, this work being the first of this genre. For elaborating it, I’ve consulted a large bibliography and I’ve done investigations in many archivistic funds from National Archives, Bistrița-Năsăud filial. Șotropa's family originated from Maieru, Bistrița-Năsăud, where the academician’s ascending are confirmed in the 2nd half of the 18th century. Șotropa’s family had crossed a long way of more than two ages, often being involved in important events of the national renaissance age from modem age. Academician’s grandfather, Iacob Șotropa (1892-1850) was a priest for almost four decades. He was a worthy priest, being a member of Greek-Catholic Vicarage Consistory of Năsăud and curacy notary. Historian’s father, Alexandru Șotropa (1824-1889), graduated from Legal Studies Faculty of Academic Highscool from Cluj (being colleague with Avram
Iancu) and Theology in Blaj. Between 1848-1849 he actively involved himself in Romanian revolution from Transilvania. Together with Florian Porcius, his brother-in-law and future member of Romanian Academy, were arrested by the Hungarian authorities and prisoned for eighteen weeks. After, revolution, Alexandru Șotropa tried to become priest in his native village, but finally he became high royal clerk (financial assessor) in Gheorgheni. Here he marries Ana Csani, marriage from which, on 215
December 5, 1867, Virgil Șotropa is born, who, at the age of thirteen months remains motherless. In 1871 his father moves to Năsăud. Virgil Șotropa attended primary and middle studies in Năsăud schools (in 1885 obtains matriculation) after which he attended, as scholar of Năsăud Frontier Funds, the courses of Philology Faculty, specialties, German and Hungarian Language and Literature from Cluj and Budapesta. Between 1892-1896 he worked as editor at “Gazeta Transilvaniei” from Brașov. Here, in this town, he made contact with the most illustrate personalities of cultural, scientifical and political of the end of the 19th century. Since this period, it is seen in his writing his affinities for the study of Romanian’s historical past from Năsăud area. In 1896, he passes as teacher at Romanian Highschool from Năsăud, where from he will elaborate and publish his first historical work, carefully (strictly) informed and argued, concerning the past of frontier regiment of Năsăud, finalized in 1913 with the publication “The History of Năsăud Schools”, a monumental monography, with the doctor Nicolae Drăganu. Between 1913-1919, he temporary retired for rebuilding his health, and after The Great Unifiy from 1918, he was rehired at Boundary Highschool from Năsăud. Now, the most prolific period of his activity on scientific and cultural domain begins. He closely dealt with saving and valuing the archives and the objects of historical and cultural value, insisting to the authorities for their protection and preservation. Virgil Șotropa’s interventions finalized with the founding of
Năsăud Museum, in 1931, having four sections, where his documents and objects of cultural and historical value had been layed, and also those of his closed collaborators (Iulian Martian, Iuliu Moisil, David Alexa and Artene Mureșan). Along time, the collections increased owing to donations of some institutions and private persons. In order to assure a certain future, the founders of the museum contrived to transforme the Archive section of this into a Subdirection of State’s Archives, giving it, this way, an official form of existence. Another creation of the historian Virgil Șotropa was the publication “Arhiva Someșana”, a historical-cultural magazine, which appeared between 1924-1940, in 28 issues. The virtue of this magazine, well received (appreciated) by the scientific world, concists in fact that it succeded (managed) to value (improve) numerous documents through publishing of some very useful historical work, contriving to create around the publication an historical school, well appreciated here and abroad. “Arhiva Someșană” was firstly a creation if Virgil Șotropa, who carried almost alone the whole difficulty of editing, management and the direction of the magazine, being in the same time emender, pager and vendor of it. published here numerous historical studies, some of monographic proportions, tapping diverse themes about Năsăud and Bistrița areas: the Romanian’s relations with Bistrița magistrature and the district rebellion of Năsăud against the German one of Bistrița, religious issues, the founding of frontier regiment of Năsăud, and aspects of army life of this, the revolution 1848-1849, from northeast Transilvania, the scholar and cultural life of the old frontier district of Năsăud. Virgil Șotropa's historical work can be classified in synthetic work ' which treats general issues of Năsăud history, among which we mention: “Năsăud” (in collaboration with dr. Al. Ciplea) Edit. By the virtue of unprecedent documents, highly systematized, the historiean presents the phenomenon of the founding of Năsăud frontier army in its fulfilled complexity, realizing a reference masterpiece, any other researcher of the issue having to start from his own investigations. The issue of education from Năsăud area had preocuppied him still from his youth when he had published in „Năsăud Gymnasium Annuary” and „Transilvania” several studies about this theme. Later, in 1913, together with dr. Nicolae Draganu, he had published his monumental monography „The History of Năsăud Schools”. Two thirds of this mongraphy are addicted to Năsăud Romanian Gymnasium, one of the most prestigious institution of middle education from Transilvania. There are revealed the founding of this gymnasium, the maintenance funds of it, the main points of its evolution till 1913. There are also analized the attributions of administration organs, the means of education used in instruction and education between 1863-1913 (books, libraries, collection laboratories, speciality cabinets), the 12 funds and foundations, created for student’s maintenance. A great attention is payed to the teachers who worked in this famous institution (each teacher has got an own microbiography) and to the students, leaving us three synoptic charts abouth these (10.965 inscribed, religious appartenence, geographic region), and in the end, the authors present an annexe with the list of the students who passed the maturity exam between
1871-1913. Șotropa is also remarked as a wordly clever potraitist realised to some personalities whom he had known and collaborated during his life: Grigore Silași, George Coșbuc, Florian Porcius, Iulian Martian. In his historical discourse, promoted by Virgil Șotropa, two periods are distingushed: one of his youth, from 1897 until his temprary retirement in 1913, in which he debates themes about Năsăud frontier regiment and the history of education, finalised with the monumental monogrsphy „The History of Năsăud Schools” and the second, the one of maturity, which lays during interbelic period, very fertile and thematically diversified in researching. The historical research of Șotropa is indissoluble connected with the past, which he had illustrated in over 60 published works, which contain about 3.000 pages, the fruit of a work of almost half of century. His work constitutes an example of consistancy in preoccupations and efforts, it has been written in a ponderate manner and full objectivity, and expresses a demophile attitude. · 218
