Zusammenfassung: | Soft Power. Arte Brasil' is a major exhibition featuring a range of 35 contemporary Brazilian artists and artists? groups working on issues currently facing their country. The exhibition is prompted by the prospect of the Rio Olympics. In 'Soft Power. Arte Brasil', Kunsthal KAdE asks what sort of country chooses to showcase itself in this way. Part of the answer to that question can be found in the work of the visual artists and artist collectives currently active in Brazil. Their art addresses a wide variety of issues, from the position of indigenous peoples in the north of the country to the water shortages in São Paolo and government economic policies. The catalogue is designed as a newspaper.00Exhibition: Kunsthal KAdE, Amersfoort, The Netherlands (21.05.-28.08.2016) |

INTRODUCTION
THE IDEA OF STAGING AN EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY
BRAZILIAN ART WAS PROMPTED BY THE DELUGE OF MEDIA
COVERAGE DURING THE WORLD CUP IN 2014. WHAT WAS
THIS COUNTRY THAT WAS PRESENTING ITSELF SO GLORIOUSLY
TO THE WORLD? APART FROM THE HYPE SURROUNDING ITS
BRICS STATUS AS AN EMERGING ECONOMIC POWER,
LITTLE WAS REALLY KNOWN ABOUT BRAZIL IN THE NETHER-
LANDS (AND TO A CERTAIN EXTENT IN EUROPE). WHEN
IT BECAME KNOWN THAT RIO DE JANEIRO WOULD STAGE
THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN 2016, IT BECAME EVEN MORE
URGENT TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS COUNTRY THAT
WAS DEDICATING ITSELF TO TWO OF THE BIGGEST COM-
MERCIAL SPORTS EVENTS IN THE WORLD - WITHIN JUST TWO
YEARS * AND TREATING THEM AS MAJOR OPPORTUNITIES TO
POSITION ITSELF AS A WORLD POWER.
WHAT BETTER WAY TO GET TO GRIPS WITH THE *REAL*
BRAZIL THAN THROUGH THE WORKS OF ITS CONTEMPORARY
ARTISTS? ARTISTS ARE PERFECT THERMOMETERS OF THEIR
TIMES. THEY HAVE THE SENSIBILITY TO REFLECT ON THE
SOCIETY THEY LIVE IN AND TO MIRROR THE ISSUES THAT
DEFINE THE ZEITGEIST. OF COURSE, THIS IS NOT ALWAYS
STRAIGHTFORWARD. NOT EVERY ARTIST IS AN ACTIVIST OR
WANTS TO ENGAGE WITH SOCIAL OR POLITICAL TOPICS, BUT
THE ONES WHO DO HAVE A GREAT FEEL FOR WHAT*S HAPPE-
NING AROUND THEM. ADDRESSING THEMES THAT ARE BOTH
GENERIC AND SPECIFIC, ARTISTS HAVE THE ABILITY TO GET
UNDER THE SKIN OF A COUNTRY.
BURDENED WITH THE TASK OF FINDING ARTISTS WHO COULD
TELL US MORE ABOUT THE ESSENCE OF THEIR COUNTRY *
AND ABOUT THE PRESSING ISSUES FACING BRAZILIANS
* WE UNDERTOOK SEVERAL RESEARCH TRIPS, SPOKE TO AR-
TISTS, GALLERISTS AND CURATORS, AND DEVELOPED A SENSE
OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING IN THIS LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE
COUNTRY. IN THE COURSE OF OUR RESEARCH, THINGS CHAN-
GED IN BRAZIL. THE PETROBRAS SCANDAL HIT THE DILMA
ROUSSEFF REGIME AND THE ECONOMY TOOK A NOSE-DIVE.
OTHER ISSUES CONTINUED TO DEMAND ATTENTION: PRO-
BLEMS LIKE POVERTY, ETHNIC INEQUALITIES, THE WATER
SHORTAGE IN SAO PAULO, THE ECOLOGICAL SITUATION OF
THE AMAZON, AND RAGING CRIME. IN THE MIDST OF OR-
GANISING TWO BIG SPORTS MARKETING OPERATIONS (AND
SPENDING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON THEM), THE COUNTRY
FACES POLITICAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL HARDSHIP.
BRAZIL IS A MODERNIST COUNTRY. THE IDEA OF STRIVING
TO CREATE A UTOPIA IS FIRMLY ROOTED IN THE CULTURE. IT
IS EXEMPLIFIED BY THE CAPITAL BRASILIA, BUILT BY THE
ICONIC ARCHITECT OSCAR NIEMEYER IN THE FIFTIES. VI-
SITING THE COUNTRY, YOU STILL FEEL THIS OPTIMISM THAT
THINGS CAN GET DONE, ALTHOUGH A CERTAIN WARINESS
STARTS TO CREEP IN. ONE OF THE ARTISTS WHO JOINED
