Abstract
The book gives an exact analysis of possibilities of introduction of
interculturalism into teaching. National curricula should, through
introduction of intercultural contents, compromise cultural goods,
knowledges and skills that older generation wishes to pass on to younger
one. This is the reason why, in certain periods of time, there are ongoing
discussions about curricula and the subjects they contain, as well as about
their extent. Intercultural curriculum should be the means of guidance in
teachef s action, owing to the fact that it determines compulsory teaching
goals, learning objectives and instructional goals, and often learning orga-
nisation as well as assessment process. Direct application of intercultural
contents in teaching practice is possible in the terms of leaving out unne-
cessary contents, introduction of innovated programmes, improving the
quality of course books and other teaching materials, and in general more
contemporary pedagogical communication between students, teachers and
parents in the context of intercultural relationships. Through education
we specify what kind of a society we want to be and what kind of a man
we want to educate. Therefore, it is important to recognize common values
which should support educational work. In this sense, the school is expec-
ted to consider values and long-term educational goals, and cosequently to
act in accordance with commonly agreed social-cultural values and edu-
cational goals. Practical applicability of knowledges will help in every-day
work of teachers, students, parents, expert assistants and other members
of intercultural community when fighting sterotype and bias as a basic
hypothesis for construction of intercultural curriculum.
Basic activities when introducing intercultural education assume
accordance and cooperation of all educational factors and continuity in
its implementation, as well as adaptation of students in communication
with other people and a better socialization. All oft this is possible thro-
ugh cooperative learning, where every member of the group participates
actively in teaching and contributes to the common result individually/
abstract
independently, in accordance with his/her abilities. One of the activities is
also getting to know history, traditional and artistic achievments of diverse
cultural groups, through connection and mutual relationship of cultures
which touch, as well as encouragement of bilingual educational models
and of creativity in one’s (minority group) language.
ît will help young people to build mechanisms for ensuring individu-
al and group human and civil rights. It will give knowledge and help te-
achers, parents, as well as other participants of teaching process in forming
attitudes towards democracy, human rights, tolerance and peace, with em-
bedded elements of development of intercultural, interactive relationships.
Intercultural curriculum implies systematic training of children and young
people to be sensitive to others, family, the weak, the poor and the disem-
powered, to their environment and their living surroundings which is cha-
racterized by cultural pluralism, race, nation, religion, viewpoint, language
etc. Education should help in building personal and cultural identity. In
todays global world, in which a monocultural model of society has been
disturbed, and in which different cultures, viewpoints and religions mix
powerfully, people should become “citizens of the world”, at the same time
not losing their roots, their cultural, social, moral and spiritual heritage.
Education should with children contribute to development of sense of per-
sonal identity connected with sense of respect of differences. Subsequently,
contemporary social-cultural environment implies education of a respon-
sible, truthful, honest, peaceful, tolerant and solidary person, a person of
creative spirit, with a deep feeling for family and preservation of Croatian
national heritage, who respects values of other cultures and nations.
The book will help all who tend to intercultural education. Intercultu-
ral philosophy and interculturalism as a world process can be denied, but
not disrespected. Only students ( children, the young and grown-ups ),
who are well familiar with characteristics and values of their national and
cultural identity, are qualified to be carriers and promotors of their own
culture, and can equally get in touch with other cultures and intercultu-
rally communicate at all levels, as well as create sensibility and openness
for understanding and acceptance of other people and different cultures.
The whole work indicates the need of introduction of new con-
tents into systematic education. They would improve general knowledge
of all students, enabling them to acquire knowledges necessary for func-
tioning in a democratic society. At the same time, these contents would

enable practical, experience-based learning and learning of intercultural
contents through active participation of students in every-day life and the
world of diversity- In other words, it is recommended to introduce inter-
cultural contents into teaching with the aim of achieving a high level of
intercultural competence. We believe that the whole work will motivate
further expert and scientific researches of these issues in the field of social
and humanistic sciences, since the problem of interculturalism in teaching
is a current and relatively new and unexpolred social topic.
