This dissertation concerns the issues of repatriation of the Polish population
from Kazakhstan. As opposed to the studies of return migrations, addres-
sing the issues of assimilation and social adaptation, this dissertation analy-
ses changes of identity of three generations of Poles from Kazakhstan. It pre-
sents the results of research using qualitative methods, such as: an in-depth
structured interview and participant observation among the repatriates li-
ving in the West Pomerania Province. Field studies were carried out also in
Kazakhstan.
This dissertation includes the analyses of transformation of the identity of
repatriates from Kazakhstan. The phenomenon of national identity was stu-
died in the biographical dimension. The symbolic and interactive concept of
identity was adopted. Identity is understood as the result of interaction with
“Others”. Changing the category of “Others” and the context of interaction
leads to the redefinition of the identity of the respondents. It has been shown
how the identity of Kazakh Poles changes along with the change of the social
context and the situation of interaction.
Two phases were distinguished in the process of shaping the identity of the
study group, corresponding to the turning points in their biographical expe-
rience: the phase after deportation and the repatriation phase. The idioms re-
ferring to identity as well as to identity strategies were identified and described.
The experience of repatriation was analysed as a challenge in the face of the
need to define identity anew in national terms after returning to the ideologi-
cal homeland. The images of oneself and “Others” appearing in narratives of
the interlocutors were analysed.
The link between the national identity and the collective memory of the
repatriates was presented. The intergenerational transfer of experience of de-
portation is the basis for the construction of national identity. The reference
to the experience of deportation allows the repatriates to cope with the situ-
ations where this identity is challenged. This dissertation presents a process of

the change of identity from “the Poles in Kazakhstan” to “the Poles from Ka-
zakhstan”.
It shows the importance of the trauma of deportation, which remains the
basis of identity narrative of three generations of repatriates from Kazakhstan
and the uniqueness of the Polish identity. |
