NEW WESTERN
LANGUAGES LOANWORDS
Modern Lithuanian is characterized by two tendencies in using
foreign words — the active use of known and accepted loanwords
and introduction of new loanwords from West European languages,
most of them coming from English and some from German and
French.
After the restoration of the country’s independence and disappe-
arance of a long-term isolation, Lithuania has been orientated to
Western Europe. This was first reflected in the use of foreign words,
which enabled us to see and understand the danger of the lexical
overflow to Lithuanian culture and language. It has been noticed
that Lithuanian pronunciation and even syntax are being influenced
by certain elements of English. The amount of foreign words in
Lithuanian endangers the variety of Lithuanian vocabulary, its lexi-
cal abundance and singularity.
The new loanwords from West European languages are emplo-
yed by people of various professions — managers, bankers, econo-
mists, politicians, artists and scholars. They have also spread among
translators, reporters and foreign visitors to the country, and are
especially favoured by young people. Foreign words are frequently
heard in concerts, variety shows, TV and radio programmes. The
loanwords are often observed not only in speech but also in written
Lithuanian, especially in newspapers and magazines.
This book is mainly for students, teachers, newspapermen and all
those who understand and appreciate the importance of the culture
of the Lithuanian language.

One of the principal aims of the book is to teach the correctness
of the mother-tongue and to develop the ways of expressing thoughts
in the native language, which is one of the main elements of national
culture.
Another aim is practical, i.e. a number of Lithuanian equivalents
are suggested for the loanwords in use.
In fact, the book deals with the tendencies in the new loanwords
use and their spreading and encourages all the speakers of Lithua-
nian to exercise their creative power in finding various proper origi-
nal equivalents for the foreign words.
The analysis is based on the material collected since 1990 from
various sources, such as mass media, advertisements, booklets, etc.
with the view of presenting the new loanwords in use to the greatest
possible extent.
The book consists of two parts. In the first part the authors deal
With the most important reasons for the spreading of the new West
European loanwords, their morphological form and tendencies of
use, indicating how Lithuanian can be impoverished by loanwords
replacing the original Lithuanian words. At the same time new Lit-
huanian equivalents for certain loanwords are introduced.
The second part of the book presents a list of most frequently
used loanwords and their accepted Lithuanian or international equi-
valents. Here the reader can also find original Lithuanian words,
user terms, that have become active of late, once found only in the
passive usage, as well as words that can be used only in certain
meanings. The latter use is marked because of the polysemy of the
new loanwords. The list also includes loanwords which have not been
morphologically adapted to Lithuanian with their original equiva-
lents.
Greatest attention is paid to words belonging to the neutral layer
of the vocabulary as well as to terms frequently used in various
spheres of activity.
The authors present all proper Lithuanian equivalents for the
loanwords: those suggested by the National Board of the Lithuanian
language as well as those chosen by most language users, the authors
included. Special attempts have been made to introduce as many
relevant equivalents to the loanwords as possible, some of them em-
ployed as synonyms, with the explanations for the choice of language
users.

The book is based on the opinion that a language is created by
a society and linguists can direct the use of linguistic elements from
a normative point of view suggesting a relevant variety of variants to
choose from.
In conclusion, it is necessary to note that a blind imitation of
foreign languages impoverishes the native language, which loses its
correctness, stability and expediency, resulting in the loss of lucidity
and precision. It has been observed that a wide use of new loanwords
dulls the expressiveness of thought and disturbs the creative process
of speaking. Most speakers overlook the inner potentialities of the
native language to name new objects, phenomena, etc. In fact, spe-
akers do not look native words and terms but lack respect for the
mother-tongue, as a means of expressing one’s national culture; most
complicated ideas can fully be expressed by means of the wordstock
of the Lithuanian language.
