SUMMARY
The book devoted to the old Jewish cemetery in
Olkusz
is a
publication of purely reference character in the strict sense of this
word. It contains translations and descriptions of all tombstones
(matzevas) that are available at the moment, including relics of
the past that are now known only from archives. Only a handful
of tombstones from the original inventory of stone plates, which
have ever been put up there, can be found at the area of the old
cemetery. All of them have been relocated.
In many cases, tombstones documented between
1990
and
2005
could not be successfully located again. This difficulty was
mentioned in the particular matzevas descriptions. On the ceme¬
tery plan, this tombstone category was marked using Polish alpha¬
bet letters A, B,
....

But, as it was mentioned earlier, these tomb¬
stones locations are purely provisional. Tombstones marked with
letters
U
and W, including several other ones, were taken away for
revitalising works in
1993,
and were the only ones to be returned
to the cemetery after ten years. Others disappeared.
Tomb plates numbered from
1
to
40
come from the coverage
of a canal that supplies water to the fire-fighting water tank at Po-
morzany. They were taken there by the Nazis in the course of the
canal building works during World War II. The tomb plates recove¬
red in
2006
and
2007
were arranged into five rows. Naturally, they
do not correspond at all with any graves in the earth.
At the time when this book was published, several fragments
of tombstones could be found near the Town Guard building and
in the Town Guard s garage. Two of them have been Successfully
documented.

The first proof of Jewish settlement in
Olkusz
dates back to
the medieval times at the very outset of the 14th century (prior to
1317).
As the first confirmed historical references to
Olkusz
come
from the second half of the 13th century, we may take it for grah-
ted that Jewish community s connections with
Olkusz
reach back
to the beginning of the history of the town.
It should be emphasised here that the beginnings of Jewish
settlement in
Olkusz
may also have their fairy-tale history. Accor¬
ding to
Moshe
Berger,
an
Olkusz
citizen
öf
Jewish origin, who docu¬
mented his youth memories in his memoirs, the following inscrip¬
tion was placed over the entry door to the
Olkusz
synagogue.
„Olkusz,
the ancient town. Established as early as even before the
New Era, it was called„El-Kish . This name was coined by Phoenicians;
who used to come here to trade in silver and pottery glazing material
acquired in local mines
According to another legend, whose origin

was buried at the
Olkusz
cemetery, maybe even the one that is the subject of this study.
In fact two Jewish cemeteries are known to have existed in
Olkusz.
The new Jewish cemetery, established in the early 20th
century, was documented in the form of a monograph published in ear-
the older Jewish cemetery was most probably established after
1584.
