as the example
of changing from the mystical to the
mechanical attitude of the body
Castrati
as we know are one of the unique phenomena in the Western
music culture. They appeared during the late 16th century and became great
stars in the 17th and 18th century opera. They were adored and idolized the same
way today's pop stars are. They presented some kind of angels on the stage,
especially in the opera. In the Western Christian tradition female voices were
not appropriate, so there was found a way to strengthen a child's pure voice
with the male vocal power and with that the high register of female voice was
achieved. The cultural background of the
Castrati
is provided mostly by the
difference between the Baroque era and the Enlightment. Their social and his¬
torical position is defined in relation to the body, especially to the female body.
Since the Middle Ages the human body has been stigmatized and dedicated
to death. The fact is that human voice represents the human desire directly, so
the voice must be under control. The
Castrati
have become a successful way of
such control at one period of history. They were adored in Baroque, but in the
period of Enlightment their singing suddenly became perverse, unnatural and
intolerable. Their story is the history of the changing attitude towards the body
from the Renaissance to the modern time of European culture.
