Chaim Rockman unlocked a suitcase, and a new
chapter in his life, when he discovered letters written
between a family — his family - dispersed over three
continents and desperately trying to maintain contact
with each other during the Holocaust
Here are children valiantly trying to save their
mother who is caught in Germany, squeezed by the
tightening Nazi web of hatred and perversion At
the same time, each child has to worry about his own
family; about practical matters like food and clothing;
about the day-to-day struggle of acclimating to new
surroundings in a foreign country, learning a new
language, and even hiding his/her German origin
With each new letter, we see how the bewildered
mother of these loving children tries to adjust to her
life under siege In desperation, she elicits help from
her children But even as the children seek new ways to
save her, become obsessed by the hope of rescuing her,
they realize that their efforts may soon be in vain
