Summary:The work of John Batho (°1939) requires us to look beyond the apparent simplicity of his images. For over fifty years, the photographer has been closely observing the world around him. Like a child discovering the richness of colours and the effects of light at every moment, John Batho – fascinated by the capturing power of the camera – tries to retain the physical presence of his immediate environment. It was in the privacy of his native Normandy that he took his first photographs in 1961. Entirely devoted to the poetry of simple things, his gaze falls on the details that arouse emotion in him: a red sweater standing out against a blue sky, oranges placed on a table of the same colour, the delicate hues of a colourful wall in Burano. Contrary to his French contemporaries for whom author photography rhymes with black and white, John Batho will explore the multiple challenges of colour photography. A simple observation imposes itself on him: "There is an effect of color by contamination. You put a color image next to another and interactions happen" he notes. Moving from Kodachrome slide to Fresson print, from Cibachrome to digital inkjet printing, John Batho likes to explore new territories. "From my first works, I understood the importance of the processes and supports restoring the photographic image, especially when it is in color, because the perception of the image and its colors is determined by the material of inscription."
