Summary It seems as though the book Prošlost i spomenici Solina (The Past and the Monuments of Solin), which is showcased in this reprint, exudes the scent of the so-called ”Croatian Spring“, seeing as how it was published in this form precisely in May 1971. It is the brainchild of Don Tugomir Jovanovič, a parish priest from Solin who left an indelible mark among his parishioners as a priest, as well as an intellectual and humanist, by initiating the project of printing specialised editions in order to popularise and bring the heritage of Salona/Solin to the general public, much like Don Frane Bulić endeavoured with his research and scientific papers. The book before you marks his first foray into publishing. It was written by Don Lovre Katié, a Croatian priest and historian from Solin (1887-1961) and Željko Raparne (1932-2018), an art historian and archaeologist, who was appointed Director of the Split Archaeological Museum in 1971. Also, the book was reprinted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of its first edition (1971) and the 60th anniversary of the death of Don Lovre Katie (1961). The historian Lovre Katie specialised in Croatian medieval history, with special emphasis on its heritage in Solin, Klis and Knin. He utilised a scientific approach for his books and papers, the best known of which fad into the categories of popular science and education. One of his most prominent eariier works is the book Stopama hrvatskih narodnih vladara. Povijesne šetnje po ^adujbinama hrvatskih knezova i kraljeva (Following the Footsteps of Croatian National Rulers. Historical Walks
through the Pious Endowments of Croatian Dukes and Kings), Zagreb (1929), was co-written with Don Frane Bulić. In the Prilozipovijesti umjetnosti (Contributions to Art History) from 1956, Lovre Katie published an article tided Solin od VII do XX stoljeća (Solin from the 7th to the 20th Century).
The 1971 book The Past and the Monuments of Solin centres on the aforementioned review paper and includes another paper by Željko Raparne Soim do VII. stojeća (Solin Until the 7th Century), which was written specifically for this occasion, thus rounding out the entire history of Salona/Solin. The popular science style of the two eminent authors reflects a microcosm of eventful, layered and perpetually volatile historical processes. The book becomes a vademecum of sorts for every native of Solin, as well as all Croatian history enthusiasts. This might be a good time to remind the readers of the importance of this reprint, despite first being published fifty years ago. Although small groups of archaeological researchers are constantiy visiting Salona and the sites of ancient Croatian Solin and science books providing analyses of specific topics are being published, an exhaustive excavation of the most important ancient city on the eastern Croatian coast is still nowhere near fruition. The important role of Salona on the global scale has been acknowledged to an extent, but without explorations of the medieval sites in Solin, we would still be ignorant when it comes to the first few centuries following the arrival of Croats. Regardless of all the other relevant science books, one such formatted book, which is accessible and provides a general overview to the wider public, while being more comprehensive than a guide, definitely has a place in private and public libraries.
