SUMlVIARŸ ľ I lhe expression "narrow gauge railways” denotes railways laid to a track jL gauge Of less than 1435 mm (known as standard gauge). The narrow gauge was usually adopted to reduce construction costs, and narrow gauge railways could also be completed mope quickly. Narrow gauge railway rolling stock was also more economical to build and Operate. In Latvia 406 km of narrow gauge railways were built before WorldWar I for local passenger and goods traffic. Mixed goods and passenger trains ran on a regular basis. The total length of industrial narrow gauge railways constructed for industrial purposes was limited, comprising no more than tens Of kilometers. The situation changed rapidly during World War I when almost 1000 km of narrow gauge railways were built in Latvia for military use. Fighting reached Latvian soil in 1915. The front line between the Russian and German armies ran afong the Daugava river, with the Russian Army positioned in the East, in Vidzeme and Latgale, and the GermanArmyinthewest, in Kurzeme. Military railways were built by both armies. These lines were called battle field or trench railways (Heeresfeldbahn in German) and were usually con structed using existing narrow gauge track sections. The gauge of those built by the German Army:was 600 mm while those constructed by the Russian army were of 750 mm gauge . The German Army was particularly active in the construction of narrow gauge railways and each line built for use by the military was slightly different to the others. Among the first railways to be laid were those designed to bring supplies
to the Daugava front, as well as the Riga front. Part of the latter was meant to be worked either by horses or locomotives. The Ventspils-Stende battlefield railway was constructed in 1916-1917, as were a few other narrow gauge lines planned before the war, for example the Meitene-Bauska line. The narrow gauge lines along the western coast of the Baltic Sea and in the Liepā ja region were particularly important from a strategic perspective. When World War 1 ended a significant number of narrow gauge railways laid by the German Army were taken over by the newly-formed Latvian State Railway Authority, while the lines constructed by the Russian Army could not be used and were dismantled early inl920. The 600 mm gauge railway lines built by the German Army and taken over by the State were officially called the field railways, a direct translation of the German term Feldbahn. In the 1920s and 1930s the field railways were incorporated in the national railway network and were widely used for local passenger and goods trans port. These railways were rebuilt; new station buildings and goods facilities were provided, unloading areas were laid with cobblestones, and the infra structure was improyed, with gradients being eliminated by the construction
of new embankments and bridges. During this time two separate 600 mm railway networks were established - the Jēkabpils-Viesīte railway and Ventspils-Stende railway, and in addition the Meitene-Bauska, Liepāja-Rucava, Aizpute-Saldus and other railways were adapted for ordinary traffic. In addition to the public narrow gauge railways, some departments, firms and even private individuals owned railway lines, for example the Latvian State Forests railway lines which were laid as branches off existing lines for the transport of wood. In the 1930s the peat industry began to develop. In 1936 the Ministry of Ag riculture set up the Peat Factory Authority which took control of five existing peat factories at Ploce, Salaspils, Sloka, Aizpute and Līvāni. In 1938 the Peat Factory Authority was re-established as the State-owned enterprise Kūdra, which in 1940 became the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic Peat Industry Trust. By 1941 the Trust was operating 12 peat factories, served by narrow gauge lines with a total length of 104.4 km. Most of these were of 600 mm gauge although after 1940 only 750 mm railway lines were built to serve new peat factories. During World War II the Red Army occupied Latvia in 1940 and the whole na tional railway network, including field railways, was taken over by the USSR military. In July, 1941 Latvia was quickly overrun by the German Army. Mil itary activity was most pronounced on the west coast of the Baltic Sea. This included railway construction. During the German occupation the first siding to be constructed in this coastal region was the siding
from Mazirbe to Saunags. A number of narrow gauge railways were built or reconstructed; how ever, the existing network was primarily utilized. It is interesting to note that wartime transport problems were less evident on the narrow gauge railways and during World War II traffic on these lines was less subject to disruption. Because the infrastructure had been destroyed, during the early post-war years, the only means of transport for those living in remote areas were nar row gauge field railways, which had largely remained intact. They also provid ed stable jobs for local residents. In the late 1950s, the rapid development of road transport led to a decline in use of narrow gauge railways. At that time, the total length of the narrow gauge railways reached its peak , with 900 km in general use together with nearly 700 km of industrial lines, mostly used for peat extraction. Over the next few years, the narrow gauge network diminished in size and in August, 1972 the last public 600 mm railway line was closed. However “Mazbānītis” (The Little Train) has not been forgotten. The Vents pils Seaside Open-Air Museum has a museum railway line and a historical exhibition devoted to the “Mazbānītis”, and some other surviving steam loco motives and wagons are located in museums in Rīga, Talsi and Viesīte. |
