The Earliest Records of Tsunami in
History
The term tsunami comes from the
Japanese, composed of the two kanji
(teu)
meaning harbor and
(ваті),
meaning
wave. (for the plural, one can either follow
ordinary English practice and add as s, or
use an invariable plural as in the Japanese).
Tsunami are sometimes referred to as tidal
waves. In recent years, this term has fallen
out of favour, especially in the scientific
community, because tsunamic actually have
nothing to do with tides. The once-popular
term derives from their most common
appearance, which is that of an
extraordinarily high tidal bore. Tsunami and
tides both produce waves of water that move
inland, but in the case of tsunami the inland
movement of water is much greater and lasts
for a longer period, giving the impression
of an incredibly high side. Although the
meanings of tidal include resembling or
having the form or character of the tides,
and the term tsunami is no more accurate
because tsunami are not limited to
harbours, use of the term tidal wave is
discouraged by geologists and
oceanographers.

About the Author
H.K. Pathak, M.Sc, Ph.D., is a
seasoned teacher over three decades
professional standing. He has worked
on varied crucial issues on environmental
science and disaster and hazard
management and it know for his
contribution for writing several research
papers on ecology and environment and
its management. He has been honored
by various scientific organizations for
his contributions in educational
experimentation and innovations in
biological studies. A prolific writer, he
has many outstanding books to his credit
which won him wide acclaim. Currently
he is visiting faculty to many reputed
institute in Uttrakhand.
R.V. Prajapati, a senior Journalist
and prolific writer, has created a niche
for himself as an analyst. An M.A. in
English Literature and Geography. He
is currently editor of a news magazine
published from Ahmadabad. He has now
diversified into various disciplines with
a special interest in journalism,
geography, human rights. He is further
working on a geographical project.
