Contribution to interpretation of a sociocultural phenomenon
The study represents the view that The Trumpet festival in Guca
cannot be viewed only as a musical happening but also as an ambivalent
cultural phenomenon that reflects all of our social, cultural (aesthetic,
ethical, educational, religious) and political characteristics.
Being a place of social and cultural communication with suffi-
ciently long duration, popularity and recognition, the festival in Guca has
become the manifestation with a highly recognizable traditional concept in
music and beyond it. Nowadays, a specific sound of Serbian brass music is
recognizable as well as an ‘authentic product’ at the biggest and most
prestigious festivals worldwide, whereas some of the soloists have become
true ‘stars’ that have been given a professional recognition and greatest
musician authorities.
There are three ‘Brass schools’ in Serbia - Eastern, Western and
Southern, each of them having its characteristically recognizable musical
patterns.
A cultural, political and the overall context of the festival on the
one hand, and thepopularity of the ethno music on the other, have given a
great impetus to the revival of the motives for maintenance and
improvement of the manifestation such as The Trumpet festival in Guca is.
Another reason is the need to preserve the elements of a Serbian national
identity through the maintenance of traditional artistic forms.
The expansion of the brass music to the Province of Vojvodina and
the adjacent Bosnian Serb Republic (Bosnia and Herzegovina) - areas
where, in general, that kind of musical tradition was never represented —
indicates the popularity of the brass music.
The Trumpet festival in Guca sublimates various cultural
characteristics involving not only the territory of Serbia, but also the entire

Taking into account a longstanding tradition and cultural
uniqueness of the festival, that meet the criteria of the UNESCO
Convention, there are lots of reasons to promote this unique manifestation
as one of the recognized, so-called Intangible Cultural Heritage of mankind.
In this study various resources of the existing data relevant to the
subject have been used, as well as the results of a sociological research
carried out by using complementary methods for creation of the empirical
evidence, thus enabling a comprehensive insight into this socio — cultural
phenomenon.
