Zusammenfassung:Swaziland is one of Africa's smallest countries with a total area of 17,360km2 and a population of just over 1 million, mostly subsistence farmers on communal Swazi Nation Land. Although the country is often viewed as rural, no one lives far from an urban centre and most rural households have members living in town or in the urban areas of neighbouring South Africa. An estimated 25% of the population resides in urban areas, a number projected to grow to nearly 40% by 2030. The stagnation of the country’s economy in recent years has led to an increase in poverty, high unemployment (over 30%) and income inequality. About 45% of Swaziland's population lives in extreme poverty, subsisting on less than USD1 per day. Female-headed households are the poorest and tend to be larger in size than other households. Despite more than a decade of government policies that have as their goal to reduce poverty and gender-based inequalities, women and children continue to be poorer and more disadvantaged than other groups, both in monetary terms and in having their basic needs met.
