SUMMARY
Introduction. Over the one hundred-year period scholars use the terms Syrian,
Syrian/Palestinian and Middle-East crosses, and the crosses of the Holy Land as a
general definition for a very large group of various Byzantine pendant crosses-
reliquaries. The history of Khanenko s Syrian collection also counts up more than
one hundred years starting from the moment of its appearance in the Russian Em¬
pire (today it is stored in the National Museum of the History of Ukraine). Accord¬
ing to his contemporaries,
Bogdan Khanenko,
a well-known collector and an art pa¬
tron, purchased the collection from a certain engineer who had been working at
railway construction in Damascus (before
1914).
The collection primarily consisted
of the crosses which immediately came into science as the Syrian ones
[Конда¬
ков
1915: 104;
Петров
1915: 25—26].
The idea that the tradition of making crosses-reliquaries cast in copper for pil¬
grims is of Syrian/Palestinian origin emerged in the early period of studying of
these crosses
[Dalton
1901;
Strzygowski
1904; Wulff 1909—1911;
Bock
1906;
Кондаков
1914;
Миятев
1922;
King
1928].
Over a long-term period the idea re¬
mained incontestable as there wasn t any special research in this sphere until the
second half of the 20th century. It was one of the main reasons for a widely accepted
dating assumption of crosses of this type
—
the
6
century and the beginning of the
7
century, i.e. the period before the Arab conquest of the Holy Places
—
it was a
wrong date as it turned out later. In the late
1950s
this date became disputable, and
at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries it became apparent that the pendant crosses-
reliquaries had appeared on the territory of the Byzantine Empire only in the 9th
century and were widely used in the
10
and the
1
1 centuries; they gradually dis¬
appeared in the 12th and the 13th centuries. New conceptions about the origin and
development of this tradition started to gain ground largely due to the increase in
archaeological findings of the crosses dated by accompanying coins primarily
within the territory of Bulgaria. The beginning of the 21s century was marked by
publications of two outstanding research works
—
catalogues of Byzantine pendant
crosses by B. Pitarakis and by L. Doncheva-Petkova [Pitarakis
2006;
Дончева-
Петкова2011].
The new research of the collected materials does not only specify the chrono¬
logical framework of this phenomenon showing its diversity. They open up the pos¬
sibility to define plainly two groups of crosses-reliquaries in such a variety:
(1)
crosses with traditional iconography of the Crucifiction with (and without) the
Mother of God and John the Evangelist on the first leaf and the Mother of God in an
orans pose with (or without) four Evangelists on the second leaf;
(2)
crosses with
non-traditional iconography of very schematic and even rough images of the Virgin
Mary and the Child and the Virgin Mary Orans, various Saints in an orans pose, and
crosses and cross-shaped designs. The findings of crosses of the first group are
ubiquitous ones and their derivative local
iconographie
variants are found predomi¬
nantly in the Balkan-Danube Region. The findings of crosses of the second group
are distributed mainly over the territories of the Eastern provinces of Byzantium of
the end of the
10*
century and the
1
1 century in the Asia Minor and, to a lesser
degree, in the Syrian/Palestinian Region; in many cases they are found in the Euro¬
pean part of the Empire. On the generalized distribution map of crosses-reliquaries
compiled by B.Pitarakis, the Syrian/Palestinian Region is distinguished by a very
low density of findings [Pitarakis
2006:
fig.
78].
Giving the new date of crosses-
reliquaries, such situation casts doubts on the idea of the consolidated Syrian/Pale-
215
stinian
origin of Byzantine crosses-reliquaries. And a small number of findings of
crosses-reliquaries in the Syrian/Palestinian Region makes it is impossible to talk
about their specificity. Therefore, we consider this region to be only a part of the
single Middle-East area of findings of crosses-reliquaries.
The idea of the Constantinopolitan origin of the crosses-reliquaries of the first
group (with a traditional iconography) and the Middle-East origin of the crosses-
reliquaries of the second group (with a non-traditional schematic images of Saints
and cross-shaped designs) seems more promising as of today. In this particular case,
the Middle East means only Asia Minor provinces of Byzantium along with adjoin¬
ing territories of the Syrian/Palestinian Region rather that the Middle East in a
broad sense. Not all researchers accept the new insights in the origin of pendant
crosses-reliquaries; nevertheless, the recent publications contain more relevant
term
—
Byzantine crosses-reliquaries
—
instead of the term Syrian/Palestinian
crosses-reliquaries.
Founders of the collection and its history.Vas foundation of two museums in
Kiev is connected with the names of
Bogdan
Khanenko and Varvara Khanenko, the
well-known collectors and art patrons of the second half of the 19th century and the
beginning of the 20th century, owners of the Syrian collection. Since
1899
till
1904,
Bogdan
Khanenko spent much effort and money in creation of the first pub¬
licly accessible museum in Kiev
—
Kiev Art/Industrial and Scientific Museum
Named after the Emperor Nikolay Aleksandrovich. According to
Bogdan
Kha¬
nenko
s
testament compiled a month before his death (on May
26, 1917),
his large
personal collection of masterpieces of domestic and world painting, sculpture and
decorative and applied arts, stored in Khanenkos private residence in Kiev, was
also transferred to the city of Kiev providing that the Museum would have the offi¬
cial name
—
Khanenko s Collection and that the collection would be stored in its
entirety. Pursuant to the same testament, he transferred his capital to the Kiev
Art/Indistrial and Scientific Museum. Hovewer, in April of
1924,
shortly after the
death of Varvara Khanenko (on May
7, 1921),
the Museum of Arts Named after
Bogdan
Khanenko and Varvara Khanenko was deprived of the names of its foun¬
ders because of a lack of Khanenko s revolutionary merits 87. Both museums
were reorganized, and their collections were redistributed among the city s muse¬
ums.
The Syrian collection was transferred to the Arts/Industrial Museum at the
time when its owners were alive; after the reorganization of the museum the collec¬
tion was transferred to the Central Historical
Musem
(today the National Museum
of the History of Ukraine). The research showed that the crosses were then sepa¬
rated from the Syrian collection and temporary returned to the Khanenko s Mu¬
seum to be prepared for publication in the third issue of the Album
Древности
русские. Кресты и образки
( Russian Antiquities. Crosses and Small Icons )
(two issues of the Album were published in
1899—1900).
In the process of prepara¬
tion of the publication the crosses from the Syrian collection were combined with
the crosses purchased by Khanenko earlier including those of the Ancient
Rus
ori¬
gin. In
1937,
in such combined version
—
sewn on cardboard sheets
—
they were
given back to the Historical Museum and added to the Syrian collection. Many
crosses were lost during the World War II. It would be possible to define a full list
of crosses on the basis of glass negatives once prepared for publication of the third
87
Khanenko s name was returned to the museum only in
1998.
Now it is the National
Museum of Arts Named after
Bogdan
Khanenko and Varvara Khanenko.
216
issue
of the Album and now stored in personal archive of N.Teteriatnikova in the
USA. But they remain unpublished.
Collection specification. Khanenko s collection is functionally divided into two
groups of crosses: pendant crosses related to personal godliness (No.
1—61)
and li¬
turgical crosses which were used in liturgical practice and as the elements of church
decoration (No.
62—70).
The basis of the collection primarily consists of pendant
crosses-reliquaries (No.
1—52)
and pendant crosses with single-surface images
(No.
53—57)
and pendant crosses (No.
58—61).
Liturgical crosses (the second
group) are represented by detached fragments of processional crosses (No.
63—64)
and the crosses which presumably decorated liturgical vessels, books and
chorases
(chandeliers) (No.
62, 65, 66).
The group includes also four processional crosses
(No.
67—70);
they are not related to the Syrian collection , but were a part of
Khanenko s collection (Annex I). The Byzantine crosses of the unknown origin
from NMHU s collection, which are included in the annex to the basic catalogue,
are represented only by pendant crosses of the first group: crosses-reliquaries
(№ 71—80)
and crosses with single-surface images (No.
81—82)
(Annex II).
The crosses-reliquaries with non-traditional (deep-graved and slight-graved)
images, which were characteristic primarily of the Byzantine cult sculpture of the
Middle-East range, constitute the most interesting and outstanding part of the col¬
lection. This group of crosses remains the least understood one; introduction of the
new distinctive and unique materials into scientific use will encourage further in-
depth study of this group.
Particular emphasis should be placed on the crosses which hold the greatest in¬
terest for researchers of Christian culture of Ancient
Rus.
The introduction of the
previously unknown findings of processional crosses, which were used in a liturgi¬
cal practice of Ancient
Rus
(No.
68—-69),
into scientific use is of particular impor¬
tance. The same holds true for the findings of exceptionally rare forms of those
Byzantium-shaped crosses-reliquaries produced in the Balkan/Danube Region and
probably in
Rus
at the end of the 10th century and in the
1
1th century (No.
48, 50,
52, 76).
Of special interest among them is the form (No.50) used as a prototype for
one of the variants of pendant crosses with the Crucifiction widely distributed
mainly in
Rus
and Scandinavia. All these open up the new possibilities to under¬
stand the processes of formation of traditions of Ancient
Rus
cult sculpture that
were developed in the tideway of Byzantine tradition.
Conclusion. Over decades, scholars knew Khanenko s Syrian collection only
by brief information from
N.
Kondakov and
N.
Petrov;
researchers cherished the
hope to find the standard samples of Syrian Christian metal sculpture in the collec¬
tion. Direct analyses of the collection, especially its Christian part, show that its
content represents a whole variety of Byzantine crosses, on the one hand, and con¬
tains a great number of the crosses with deep-graved and slight-graved images, on
the other hand; such crosses may really become the standard ones for solving the
problem. However, the integrity of collection was damaged at the very beginning of
its museum history. Therefore, instead of regarding this collection as the standard
one, we consider it to be the collection of Byzantine crosses
—
unique in its diver¬
sity
—
that significantly adds to the data bank of sources for studying Byzantine
Christian metal sculpture and Ancient
Rus
Christian metal sculpture, closely tied to
the Byzantine one.
