Interculturalization
and
Teacher Education
Institutions of higher education are keen to improve teachers intercultural
experiences, communication, and understanding but offer few resources for
bringing the research literature to direct application in teacher education
programs. This volume addresses that gap by examining what intercultural
exchanges in teacher education look like, why they are important, and how
they can be maintained. The authors examine how
sociocultural
beliefs,
institutional structures, and external accreditation bodies interact in the pro¬
cess of interculturalization, highlighting the incentives and barriers as well
as strategies to implement and maintain interculturalization projects.
Highlighting pragmatic examples, this book addresses the challenges and
benefits of interculturalization that can be applied to teacher education pro¬
grams from both a theoretical and a practitioner perspective.
Cheryl A. Hunter is Assistant Professor in the Educational Foundations and
Research Department at the University of North Dakota, USA. Her recent
research focuses on intercultural education, immersion, and cultural intelli¬
gence. She explores the competencies and capabilities of teachers to manage
effectively in culturally diverse settings. She has explored types of intercul¬
tural experiences (personal, professional, and academic) and the breadth
and depth of intercultural experiences (short-term, long-term, immersion)
as they relate to perceptions about the role of diversity in teacher education.
Donna Pearson is Associate Professor in the College of Education and
Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of North Dakota,
USA. Her academic instruction is in Secondary Education; Social Studies
Methods, Curriculum, and Instruction.
A. Renee
Gutiérrez
is Assistant Professor at
Longwood
University, USA.
After a 10-year career as a Navy officer, she pursued her Master s and PhD
in Spanish Literature at the University of Virginia. She researches two fields,
studying in eighteenth-century Spanish epic poetry, and language learners
intercultural interactions.
