| adam_text | MULTICULTURAL SITE NO. l IN ZAMIECHÓW, JAROSŁAW DISTRICT Summary Site No. 1 in Zamiechów is located in Chłopice com mune, Jarosław district, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. The village Zamiechów is located in the eastern part of the commune, about 6 km southwest of Radymno. Site 1 was discovered in 1993 by A. and B. Szpunar in the course of surface collection survey conducted within The Polish Archaeological Record (AZP). This first surface research provided setdement materials dating back to the prehistory in general terms, the Late Roman Period and the Early Middle Ages. Further surface studies covered by the AZP program were carried out in this area in 1998 by A. Kostek and W. Poradyło. As a result, the chronological range of the site has been broadened. Apart from previ ously recognized materials related to the Early Middle Ag es, traces of Stone Age setdement was also discovered in the form of flint artefacts as well as the Neolithic and the Late Middle Ages pottery. As in previous surface studies, all the artefacts were transferred to the museum collections in Przemyśl. Before the commencement of investments re lated to the construction of the A4 motorway, on commis sion for the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, the surface collection survey and sondage ex cavations were carried out by the Foundation for Archaeo logical Centre in Rzeszów headed by S. Czopek. Overall 2.2 ares were studied, where the remains of immovable fea tures were registered in two trenches, whereas the next one uncovered another feature, probably ruined by deep ploughing and
a modern ditch, (presumably drainage). All the conducted studies revealed the multicultural character of the site where only settlement materials were recorded. Open-area excavations, which were related to the con struction of the A4 motorway along Jarosław-Radymno section, began on 24 November 2009 and they were con tinued until the beginning of July 2010 (with the winter break). The research was undertaken by mgr E. Kędzier ska in cooperation with mgr M. Buszta-Dec on the behalf of the Foundation of the Rzeszów Archaeological Centre. The primary site area, based on the previous surface survey and sondage excavations, was identified as approximately 5 hectares, whereas the area where the motorway had be en planned included only 2,74 hectares. In the course of charting of the area designed to pre-investment research, a much lower range of the site was designated due to the presence of peat and wetlands on the south side as well as strong slope erosion. Within four months, an area of 168.67 ares was excava ted at site No. 1 in Zamiechów. 692 immovable features in total were found as well as movable materials, which con sisted mainly of pottery sherds, flint and stone artefacts, metal (iron, bronze and silver) objects, ceramic artefacts, human and animal bones and burnt daub. The site No. 1 in Zamiechów is located on the southern slope of the valley of the Olszyna-Rudka stream, the left tributary of the Rada, between Zamiechów, Kaszyce and Zabłotce villages. Absolute heights of the discussed area are in the range between 206 and 213 m above sea level. The site included
plots where arable land was located before archaeological research. Regarding geographic description, it is located in the eastern part of the larger unit called the Rzeszów Foothills. It is a geographic mesoregion which is a part of a macroregion called the Sandomierz Basin, co vering a large area of south-eastern Poland. The flat hills of the Rzeszów Foothills are made up of Miocene clays which cover the sands, the Quaternary clays and loess. The loess causes that this area has excellent soils - chernozems, the best in the entire Sandomierz Basin. These loess-origin so ils, in the area of flat ridges to the south of the Subcarpathian Ustromtal, had already been agriculturally attractive and heavily exploited since the Neolithic period. Moreover, considering the development of the whole Sandomierz Ba sin, a very important role was played by the migration and trade routes in this region. As for this territory there are three important gates, opening the routes from the east and south of the Carpathians (Kraków, Sandomierz and Przemyśl Gates). Regarding the discussed area where the site No. 1 in Zamiechów was located, the most important was the San route, which played the role of the amber ro ute at some periods leading to the Black Sea. The excavations conducted in Zamiechów in the se ason 2009-2010 confirmed the multicultural character of the site (labelled No. 1). Based on the analyzed materials, it was found that the traces of settlement discovered in its area came from the period ranging from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. 5 chronological horizons have been
distinguished, which are characterized by different de grees of settlement activity. Only in one phase - the Ro man period - a burial was recorded. All other immova ble sources are of settlement origin, both residential and economic character. Speaking of the Neolithic period, it is difficult to de termine precisely the short-term penetration phase at the site. A small and insignificant pottery collection, proba bly associated with the Malice culture, does not create any clusters or spatial patterns. 235
Much more numerous material was represented the Early Bronze Age. At site 1 in Zamiechów, one stage of the Mierzanowice culture settlement was registered. Ceramic material with distinctive characteristics of this culture was discovered in 41 features. Most of them were pits, clustered in at least 5-6 agglomerations, which might have been traces of enclosures. Ground features with cylin drical or trapezoidal profiles and mainly layered fills were recorded there. Apart from the aforementioned features, at site 1 in Zamiechów there were also registered materi als of the Mierzanowice culture in a secondary deposit in the feature dated to the Roman period, in the posthole No. 658, as well as in the cultural layer within the follow ing ares: 3.1 - Ę3, Ę4, G6, G7; 3.2 - Kll; 3.3 - T5, U4/5. The chronological determination of ceramic materials falls into the late phase of the Mierzanowice culture. Confirma tion of such established dating regarding these artefacts at site 1 in Zamiechów is the radiocarbon determination 14C for a sample from feature 353B (MKL-1603 3350 ± 35 BP, 1690-1608 BC). This date is consistent with the dating of the end of the Mierzanowice culture in general and its Giebułtów group in particular. The Roman period is related to the functioning of the Przeworsk culture settlement and to a single burial lo cated in the same settlement. The characteristic materials of the Przeworsk culture at Zamiechów 1 were registered in 17 features. In addition, artefacts dated to the Roman period were also found in a secondary deposit in sunkenfloored dwellings of the
early-Slavonic period, numbered 23,195,210 and 582 and in the feature No. 74 dated to the tenth - thirteenth century - as well as in the accumulation layer within the ares: Ę4, Ę5, G5, G6, G7,16, Kll, U4/5. At site Zamiechów 1 there were also features without artefacts, but due to their constructional and location characteris tics, they are undoubtedly related to the Roman period and the functioning of the Przeworsk culture settlement. These are 38 features known as quadrangular hearths or similar to them, as well as 28 postholes, recorded mainly within larger residential and economic buildings. Dating of the burial complex was established (on the basis of the so-called good chronological indicators) to the phase B2/C1 of the Roman period. A single cremation bu rial contained remains of two individuals and a rich set of ornaments, parts of clothing and metal items associated with a wooden casket, as well as bones of mammals and birds. Particularly important and unique as for Polish ter ritories are wooden remains of the uncovered case, orna mented by (among other things) a stylized human figure. Regarding 75 features attributed to the horizon asso ciated with the Roman period, due to their artefacts, con struction characteristics or location, six of them can be determined as sunken featured dwelling of residential - economic character (features numbered 7,128,158,273, 302 and 464A). Three of them were discovered in the we stern part of the site, the other three in the eastern part, all away from its edge and from the watercourse. These were the features with a post
structure and without such support elements, whereas the characteristic quadrangular hearths (characteristic for the Przeworsk culture) formed a distinctly separated zone, slightly away from dwellings. What is more, remains of textile products as well as an am ber-antler workshop were discovered in the settlement. In the case of the Przeworsk culture there is probably one ho rizon of its functioning, covering the end of the early and the late phase of the Younger Roman period. In the case of settlement features, the only material that let us date are the fragments of pottery sherds, whose technological, mor phological and decorative features are distinctive for the developed phase of the Early Roman period and the older phase of the Younger Roman period. A small amount of wheel-thrown pottery seems to indicate the use of the set tlement only in one horizon, probably ending in phase Cl. The Early Slavic period is represented by 8 featu res of residential character. These are quadrangle dwellings with an oven in the corner, slightly sunken in the ground. Almost all uncovered huts had a similar orientation - they were facing the corners according to the four cardinal di rections. They were characterized by a flat bottom and slo ping walls, and their fills were in a basin shape. Based on the morphological and technological cha racteristics of the ceramic material uncovered there, it is possible to state that individual dwellings are contempo rary. As for the researched settlement, we cannot identi fy clusters with a clearly older character. The material fo und in the
fills is typical for the Prague cultural provinces and it can be dated to the period widely understood as the sixth/seventh century. Unfortunately, the radiocarbon date obtained from at the bottom of the sunken dwelling 582 is significantly older - 1730 ± 60 BP, after calibration 244 (68.2%) 385 AD or 135 (95.4%) 423 AD. An explana tion of this situation can be found in materials from the Roman period discovered in a secondary deposit in the Early Slavic dwellings. It is likely to take into account the destruction of older features connected with the functio ning of the Przeworsk culture settlement by Slavic featu res. This date may refer to any post constructions whose numerous traces were recorded in this part of the site. Traces of medieval chronology at site No 1 were di scovered in its central part. This phase is represented by 9 immovable features in total. These are mainly settle ment pits and one feature that functioned as a dwelling, in the form of a quadrangular sunken hut. Chronology of the settlement in this horizon can be determined on the basis of movable artefacts coming from the fills of the discovered features. Essential in the dating of artefacts is pottery vessels that appear in mass. Taking into account the characteristics of technology, surface shaping and de corations, the analysis of these elements showed that the onset of medieval settlement in the discussed area should be seen in the second half of the tenth century, i.e. after the technological breakthrough. At that time, vessels star ted to be more heavily turned on a potter’s wheel, and

after the high-speed wheel was introduced, pottery ves sels were completely turned on the wheel. The recorded fragments are mostly long-lasting, and they occur in the neighbouring areas from the eleventh to the thirteenth century. In the material from Zamiechów, a high percen tage of ornamented vessels was observed, primarily with horizontal bands of grooved lines, occurring between the second half of the tenth and the mid-thirteenth centu ry. Another indication for the chronology is the presence of pottery marks on the bottom of vessels which already appeared in the second half of the tenth century, and in the twelfth - twelfth/thirteenth centuries they were most commonly used, whereas in the first half of the thirteenth century these marks suddenly disappeared. The presence of a stone spindle whorl (made of Ovruch slate) in the fill is also a date determination, as such artefacts are related to the Polish- Ruthenian trade contacts in the eleventh thirteenth centuries. On the basis of all the presented in dications concerning the chronology of movable artefacts obtained from site 1 in Zamiechów, the development of settlement on this area should be defined within the ran ge of the period between the second half of the tenth and the first half of the thirteenth century. A large group of features were discovered in Zamie chów, which could not be identified by chronological de termination. There are 528 features, i.e. 75.8% of all regi stered immovable features. These are mainly chronological ly undetermined postholes and other types of pits, which are probably
related to the identified settlement horizons. What is more, the remains of ditches and grooves of va rious dimensions were also discovered. Presumably some of them may have come from modern times. An analysis of the location of particular archaeologi cal features and other observations related to the terra in makes it possible to conclude that the site is unlikely to continue eastward and it was probably destroyed the re by strong soil erosion. In the case of the western part, only a few features were recorded indicating no continu ation of settlement activity, thus defining the edge of the site. Considering the south-east part, unfortunately, it was not possible to study the whole area due to the presence of peat and wetlands, whereas the southern part is a lowland area near the watercourse, creating a natural boundary of the site. Therefore, speaking of the continuation of im movable features and artefacts, it is only possible to men tion as for the northern part and to a lesser extent in the north-east area. It seems that in this area we are dealing primarily with sources referring to the Roman period, the Przeworsk culture and materials related to the Early Slavic period. To a lesser extent we are also able to identified the traces of settlement of the Mierzanowic culture population. The results of the research conducted from November 2009 to July 2010 in Zamiechów have revealed that this region was attractive in terms of settlement and enjoyed popularity especially in the Early Bronze Age and later from the Roman period to the Early Middle Ages. In the course
of the research a very large group of archaeologi cal sources have been recorded, which greatly contribu ted to the extension of knowledge about the oldest stage of the history of the Pre-mountain Loess Zone. Particu larly relevant information has been obtained for the Ro man period (a new place on the San route was noted with a functioning amber workshop and traces of an atypical burial which linked various cultural traditions), as well as new data enriching the knowledge of the Early Slavic pe riod. Undoubtedly, speaking of these time periods, this site should be considered as relevant and bringing a lot of new information regarding the Podkarpacie region.
