The book presents the profile of Zdzisław Orłowski, who led the Greater
Poland Uprising 1918-1919 at the Noteć front. Following the presentation of
the character s biography, three archival documents, describing Z. Ortowski s
participation in the battles of independence in the period between 1918 and
1921, are published in the introductory article. They contain memoirs from
the Greater Poland Uprising and the 3rd Silesian Uprising, in which the hero
participated, and are kept in the Museum of the Czarnków Land. These two
documents are complemented by a biography written by Orłowski himself
(Central Military Archive). Due to the nature of the publication, which is in-
tended for readers from a wide range of backgrounds, instead of footnotes,
the author decided to place necessary explanations concerning the docu-
ments and persons mentioned in them in the form of descriptive notes added
to each document.
Zdzisław Orłowski came from the gentry, from a family with a long tradition
of the fight for independence. He was prepared to work on his land estate,
but after the service in the German army, he took part in the preparations
for the Greater Poland Uprising in the Czarnków Land. After the outbreak of
the uprising in Poznań, Z. Orłowski was appointed as the commander of the
North-West Military District. At that time, according to the decision of the
People s District Council in Czarnków since 3 January 1919, the formation of
uprising troops was initiated. The main obstacle was the lack of arms - the
reserves that were gathered until that time were sufficient for one company
only. That is why Z. Orłowski went to Poznań, in order to seek support and
provide more arms to his unit. He solicited for the provision of weaponry for
a thousand of insurgents in Czarnków district. He brought some of the arms
from Poznań himself on 6 January 1919. The rest came with a car transport
the next day.
Having relinquished the command of the 4th Military District of the Greater
Poland Uprising, Z. Orłowski joined the Polish Army and, as the commander
of a battery, and then of a battalion in the 14th Light Artillery Regiment, he
fought during the war with Bolshevik Russia in 1920. During the battles at the
eastern front, he was drafted to Silesia, where he took part in the 3rd Silesian

Uprising, during which he organised the supply of armament for the fighting
troops as the chief of the 4th Organisation and Supply Unit. His merits in the
struggle for independence were appreciated by his superiors, who rewarded
Z. Ortowski with the highest military decorations - the Cross of Valour (three
times), the War Order of Virtuti Militari and the Cross of Independence with
Swords. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, Z. Ortowski was ap-
pointed as the president of the Greater Poland Insurgents Association, which
reflected the trust he enjoyed in Poznan. After demobilization, he got en-
gaged with business operations, running a successful coal trading company
in Poznan. Called up in 1939, he went through the combat trail as the head of
the Censorship Bureau of the Corps District Command number 7. He evacuat-
ed through Hungary to France, and then to England, where he served in the
Polish Armed Forces established in exile. After demobilization, he returned
to Poland in 1947 and settled in Poznan. For the rest of his life, he dealt with
social and veterans affairs. He died in 1982 and, at his own request, was
buried at the cemetery in Lubasz, in the section for the insurgents whom he
had commanded.
