Zusammenfassung: | The Art of Being: Poetics of the Novel and Existential Philosophy offers an account of the poetics of the realist novel, based on how the novel reorients philosophy in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Philosophers such as Kierkegaard, Sartre, and Beauvoir not only read novels and use novelistic techniques of representation in their work, but also discover a radically new way of thinking about the relation between the form of the novel and the nature of self-knowledge, freedom, and world. Drawing upon a rich archive of existentialists writing on the novel, Ong argues that for these thinkers the poetics of the novel in its classic phase - the nineteenth- and twentieth-century realist novel - discloses the conditions for thinking about the meaning of existence. Bringing together philosophy, novel theory, and intellectual history with groundbreaking readings of the novels of Tolstoy, Eliot, Austen, James, Flaubert, and Zola, this study reveals how the novel engages with philosophically rich notions of freedom, world, and the unfinished character of human life in its very form.... |

The Art of B ing is a powerful aocount of
how the literary form of the novo I reorients
philosophy to word the moaning of existence.
Yi Ping Ong shows thot for Kierkegaard,
Sartre, and Boauvoir, the form of the novo!
in its olassio phaso yields the conditions
for reconceptualizing the nature of self-
knowledge, froodom, and the world. Their
discovery gives rise to o radically now
poetics of the nineteenth- and twentieth-
century realist novol.
For the existentialists, a paradox lies at the
heart of the novol. As a work of art, the novol
exists as a given totality. At the samo time,
the oapaoity of the novo I to compel hoi iof
in tho froo and indopondont oxistonoo of its
oharaotors doponds on tho ahsonoo of any
perspective from which their lives may ho
viowod as a oonsummatod whole. At stako
in tho pootios of tho novol aro tho condi-
tions under which knowlodgo of oxistonoo
is possible. Ong s reframing of foundational
dohatos in novol thoory tokos us hoyond old
drohotomios of mind and world, intoriority and
totality, and form and mimesis. It illuminates
existential dimonsions of novelistic realism
overlooked by empirical and sociological
approaohos.
Bringing togothor philosophy, novo! thoory,
and intellectual history with groundhroaking
roadings of Tolstoy, Eliot, Auston, damos,
Ffauhort, and Zola, Tho Art of Bo/ngr rovoals
how tho novol ongagos in its vory form with
philosophically rich notions of self-knowledge,
froodom, authority, world, and tho unfinished
oharaotor of human life.
