Zusammenfassung: | Gull chicks beg for food from their parents. Peacocks spread their tails to attract potential mates. Meerkats alert family members of the approach of predators. But are these--and other animals--sometimes dishonest? That's what William Searcy and Stephen Nowicki ask in The Evolution of Animal Communication. They take on the fascinating yet perplexing question of the dependability of animal signaling systems. The book probes such phenomena as the begging of nesting birds, alarm calls in squirrels and primates, carotenoid coloration in fish and birds, the calls of frogs and toads, and weapon displays in crustaceans. Do these signals convey accurate information about the signaler, its future behavior, or its environment? Or do they mislead receivers in a way that benefits the signaler? Searcy and Nowicki take on these and other questions by developing clear definitions of key issues, by reviewing the most relevant empirical data and game theory models available, and by asking how well theory matches data. They find that animal communication is largely reliable--but that this basic reliability also allows the clever deceiver to flourish. |

They find that animal communication is largely reliable--but that this basic reliability also allows the clever deceiver to flourish.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Animal communication.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85005167</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Animal Communication</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Communication animale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Life Sciences</subfield><subfield code="x">Zoology</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Life Sciences</subfield><subfield code="x">Evolution.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Animal communication</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Nowicki, Stephen,</subfield><subfield code="d">1955-</subfield><subfield code="e">author.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJxht96JXmJ6CWvJYgbKh3</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n89621194</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The evolution of animal communication (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGyRDb4kgD3yX79hTQRK7d</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Searcy, William A., 1950-</subfield><subfield code="t">Evolution of animal communication.</subfield><subfield code="d">Princeton : Princeton University Press, ©2005</subfield><subfield code="z">9780691070957</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2004062445</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)57002379</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Monographs in behavior and ecology.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n83702774</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=313422</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="l">CBO01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=313422</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH28073880</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL485769</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10367238</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">313422</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse36464</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">3173285</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">evolutionofanima0000sear</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |
