in Seventeenth-Century
Massachusetts

In Popular Measures, Amy Morris
examines the influence of church practices
on the poetry of seventeenth-century New
England. In a community where the Book of
Common Prayer was banished from the
church, and preference was given to the
plain-style sermon (delivered orally and
often without notes), what role was there for
religious poetry? As a humanly crafted,
fixed form, poetry fell short of the ideal of
spontaneous, spirit-filled language promoted
by Congregationalists. By analyzing the
impact of this religious culture on the design
of early New England verse, Morris shows
how writers adapted English poetic
conventions to fit their new colonial context.
Puritan New England viewed the fixed
liturgies of Catholicism and Anglicanism as
spiritual crutches that ultimately impeded
genuine growth in faith. Instead of rote
prayers and formalized rituals, Congre¬
gationalists valued spontaneous and
unscripted prayer, sermons, and testimonies.
Formal poetry, with its fixed metrical
patterns and scripted nature, failed to meet
any of these ideals of spiritual language.
Nevertheless, Massachusetts produced best
sellers of religious poetry
Psalm Book (the first book printed in the
English colonies) and The Day of Doom by
Michael Wigglesworth
adapt the poetic medium to the demands of
the Puritan aesthetic.
Wigglesworth s Tfie Day of Doom
rendered poetry safe by combining an
undoubtedly serious topic, the Last
Judgment, with the popular ballad meter
more commonly used to describe the
adventures of The Nut Brown Maid. On
the one hand, the jaunt of the ballad meter
made Tiie Day of Doom attractive to his
audience, but on the other hand, the jangling
rhythm with its associations of popular song
failed completely to capture the spiritual
seriousness of its subject matter; contrast
Milton s imposing use of hexameter lines in
On the Morning of Christ s Nativity. The
artistic failure of The Day of Doom,
however, is precisely its success: by
drastically separating its spiritual content
from its metrical form, The Day of Doom
denies the value of poetry and para¬
doxically thereby renders it safe for Puritan
consumption.
Other authors and works took different
paths in bridging the divide between poetry
and the plain style. The Bay Psalm Book,
which in many ways reintroduced formal
liturgy into the avowedly non-liturgical
Congregationalist churches, protected itself
from attack by claiming to be a literal
translation of the Bible and by shunning
elaborate rhetorical effects. While the Bay
Psalm Book soon appeared in most
Massachusetts churches, the poetry of
Edward Taylor, perhaps the finest artist
among the colonial poets, remained
unpublished. While Gods Determinations
formally resembles the high-style poetry
written by Anglican authors such as George
Herbert and John Donne, its portrayal of the
soul s journey into church membership
rejects Anglican rituals in favor of Puritan
rites of passage. By turning to a more
ritualistic style to defend the beauty of an
iconoclastic church order, Taylor gives the
colonial Puritan aesthetic a final twist.
Throughout her investigation, Dr. Morris
explains the relevant political and religious
background, especially the controversial
Halfway Covenant, that shaped the
popular measures of colonial America.
