Zusammenfassung: | "Excavations at Ditches in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds during the 1980s investigated a large late Iron Age enclosure which proved to contain a remarkably early Roman villa. Discoveries included a well-preserved cellar and a range of finds, including Gallo-Belgic wares, Iron Age coins, coin moulds, Venus figurines and brooches indicating high-status occupation in the late Iron Age and early Roman period. This volume not only includes a report on the excavations of 1984-5, but also additional work, including a new geophysical survey and reassessment of the finds. Alongside re-appraisal of much of the 1980s evidence, this analysis allows the earlier material to be compared with more recent studies of the late Iron Age-Roman transition contributing to debates over processes of 'Romanization', questions of social and political continuity and the nature of villa development in Britain."--Jacket |

"Excavations at Ditches in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds during the 1980s investigated a large late Iron Age enclosure which proved to contain a remarkably early Roman villa. Alongside re-appraisal of much of the 1980s evidence, this analysis allows the earlier material to be compared with more recent studies of the late Iron Age-Roman transition contributing to debates over processes of 'Romanization', questions of social and political continuity and the nature of villa development in Britain."--Jacket The Excavations: The 1984-5 Excavations -- Preservation of the villa / by Stephen Trow -- Geophysical survey / by Tom Moore -- Discussion of the Iron Age and Roman remains / by Stephen Trow, Simon James and Tom Moore -- The Finds: Gallo-Belgic and local finewares / by Val Rigby -- The Samian / by Steven Willis -- The Coarseware pottery / by Tom Moore -- Brooches / by Don Mackreth -- Iron Age coins / by Colin Haselgrove -- Roman coins / by Richard Reece -- Claudian provincial coin / by Robert Kenyon -- An Iron finger-ring / by Martin Henig -- Pipeclay figurines / by Catherine Johns -- Glass / by John Shepherd -- The Touchstone / by Stephen Trow, with Andrew Middleton and David Moore -- Worked stone / by Fiona Roe -- Worked bone / by Stephen Trow -- Lead/lead alloy snake bracelet / by Catherine Johns -- Finds of lead alloy / by Stephen Trow -- Finds of copper alloy / by Stephen Trow -- Finds of iron / by Stephen Trow -- Carpentry nails / by Stephen Trow -- Finds of baked clay / by Stephen Trow and Tom Moore -- Wall plaster / by Tom Moore -- Marine mollusc shells / by Stephen Trow and Tom Moore -- Human remains / by Kirsi Lorentz and Tom Moore -- The charred plant remains / by Jacqueline P.
