(summary)
Site
1
at
Gulin-Młyn
in
Radom
district,
Mazowieckie
province, Central Poland, is situated on the right bank of the
Radomka river, near one of its paleochannels (so called Old River), approximately
500
m
to the south of a mill at
Gulin. The site is now almost completely covered with forest, and its northern part has been destroyed by a large
sandpit. In terms of physiography, the area belongs to the
Radom
Plain, which is a part of the South Masovian Hills.
A large cluster of prehistoric settlements, known already in the early 20th century, was located on both sides
of the Radomka river to the east of the village of
Przytyk.
On the right bank, archaeological sites are known
mainly from the
Borowina
dune and the adjacent area where the Radomka river joins with the
Bosak
creek.
The history of research on this micro-region dates back to the early 20th century. In
1902,
the first investigators,
Marian Wawrzeniecki and
Szczęsny Jastrzębowski,
catalogued the numerous sites attributable to various ar¬
chaeological cultures, including the Pomeranian and
Przeworsk
cultures. In the 1960 s,
Wojciech Twardowski
from the Regional Museum in
Radom
conducted intensive research (field-walking, rescue digging) in the area
around Gulin and Gulinek. In
1964
he performed rescue excavations of the Pomeranian culture site called
Pu¬
stynia
(the Desert} at Gulinek.
Site
1
at
Gulin-Młyn
was accidentally discovered in
1981.
Workers digging for sand found several Pomera¬
nian culture urns, which were subsequently deposited in the museum in
Radom.
The results of archaeological
inspections carried out in the years
1982-1983
gave an impulse to begin rescue excavations, which were con¬
tinued for
6
seasons
(1984, 1986-1990)
under the supervision of
Iwona
Micke
from the Museum in
Radom.
The excavations encompassed nearly the entire available area of the site,
1548
m2 in total, situated to the east
of the vast sandpit which had supplied most of the material collected before
1984.
The excavations carried
out in
1984
and
1986-1990
yielded a total of
50
features attributable to the Pomeranian culture, including
42
individual graves,
3
clusters of pottery,
4
pits with animal bones and
1
pit with bones or a pit grave. Apart from
the Pomeranian culture artefacts (features),
1
grave representing the
Przeworsk
culture, single features linked
with the Trzciniec culture, and features dated to the Early Middle Ages were also found.
In
1988,
five graves dated to the Roman Period and attributed to the
Przeworsk
culture were discovered ca
100
m
to the south of the sandpit. The cluster was interpreted as a separate archaeological site at that time, and
was described as
Gulin-Młyn,
site
5.
The Pomeranian culture cemetery in site
1
was only partially investigated, although the entire accessible
part of the site (not covered by forest) was explored. After the excavations were finished in
1990,
a forest was
planted on the area of site
1.
Further works at
Gulin-Młyn
were not undertaken until
1996,
when archaeologists from the
Radom
museum
carried out an inspection of the
Przeworsk
culture sites known from W. Twardowski s excavations performed in
1968
in the region where the Radomka joins the
Bosak
creek. The excavations were conducted for two seasons
and encompassed all of the territory not yet covered by forest. They resulted in the discovery of
42
archaeolo¬
gical features, including
7
graves of the Pomeranian culture and
35
features linked with the
Przeworsk
culture.
The Pomeranian culture cemetery
Site
1
at
Gulin-Młyn
is a cemetery typical for the south-eastern zone of the Pomeranian culture, where the
predominant burial form is that of cloche graves. The excavations and (to a lesser degree) archaeological in¬
spections led to the discovery of
57
features attributed to the Pomeranian culture. The vast majority of them
were graves
(54),
including cloche-, urn- and pit graves. Of these
17
burials belonged to
7
collective graves
found in the site. Apart from the graves, intentional clusters of pottery
(3)
were also recorded.
165
Anthropological analysis of bone material made it possible to determine the sex for only
2
features, and
the age of the deceased was determined for
9
features. Moreover, two double burials were identified. Fe¬
ature
6/89,
with rich inventory comprising an iron knife and needle, spindle-whorl, and
4
vessels (in frag¬
ments], contained the remains of most likely two adult individuals, while in feature
3/96
the remains of a
20-30
year old adult and a child aged between
5-15
were discovered, accompanied by poor ceramic equip¬
ment (Bokiej, in this volume).
Animal bones were found in
6
graves. These were usually chicken bones and, in feature
6/89,
the bones of
cattle and sheep/goat (Lasota-Moskalewska, in this volume), which is typical of the discussed period.
The discussed cemetery was founded in phase A2 of the Younger Pre-Roman Period and most likely functio¬
ned until phase
B2/Cx
of the Roman Period. The state of preservation of the archaeological material and the
advancement of the research make it impossible to establish chronological frameworks more precisely.
Anthropological analysis of bone material from the Pomeranian culture cemetery
The analysed anthropological material comes from
50
features uncovered in the years
1982-84 (11), 1986-
1990 (32)
and
1996-97 (7).
The most numerous category were cloche graves, represented by
31
features
(62%).
There were
18
urn gra¬
ves
(36%)
and one pit grave
(2%).
The degree to which the bones were burned varied considerably, as did their colour and state of preservation.
In some of the graves, the bones were poorly burned while in others they were burned strongly or unevenly.
The colour varied from light cream to brownish-grey, sometimes with brick-red, dark brown or green spots.
Particular features contained anything from just a few grams to
3
kilograms of bones.
Most burials
(78,3%)
held the remains of one individual. Several burials
(21,7%)
contained the bones of two
children, an adult and a child, or two adults.
The arrangement of the remains sometimes suggested that the bones were placed in anatomical order. Such
a situation was recorded in
8
of
17
features explored in the 1980 s, which is approximately
47%.
The age at death was determined (in terms of years or age class) for
54
of the deceased
(90%),
or for
56
(93, 3%)
if adult individuals are included. The most numerously represented age classes are Adultus
(26,8%)
and Infans I
(26,8%) %),
followed by Infans
U
(16%).
The least numerous group was luvenis
(3,6%).
There were
no individuals attributed to the late Maturus
(50-60
years) and Senilis (over
60
years) classes.
The
22
deceased for whom the determination of sex was possible comprised only
6
men
(27,3%)
and as many
as
16
women
(72,7%),
which gives the latter an advantage of more than
2.5:1.
One of the potential explanations
may be a non-random (in term of sex) distribution of graves in the cemetery. However, this requires additional
analysis that would take into account the complete results of the excavations on the cemetery.
Regardless of the small sample (and the distorted sex ratio), a pattern typical of prehistoric populations can
be seen, with a higher incidence of death among females and in lower age classes than males.
The reconstruction of body height was based on measurements of the preserved epiphyses of long bones,
which were performed in
11
adults, including
3
men,
6
women and
2
individuals of undetermined sex. Two of
the men were of medium height, while the other two were tall. Among the women, five were tall and four were
of medium height. For the remaining two women, their height could not be determined, because the measured
values indicated two categories at the same time: tall and of medium height.
Anthropological analysis of bone material from the
Przeworsk
culture cemetery
The anthropological analysis of the cremated bones encountered significant difficulties. In more than half of the
burials
(67,6%),
bone remains were sparse and poorly preserved, and the lack of diagnostic traits rendered the
determination of the age and sex of the deceased impossible.
The anthropological analysis of the population from Gulin
Młyn
was performed for
37
features. Two of them
contained the remains of two individuals (features
3/96 -
the remains of an adult and a child and
6/89 -
the
remains of two adults).
The remains of
4
children and
10
adult individuals were identified in the analysed material. One of the chil¬
dren (feature
35/96)
belonged to the age category Infans I, two of them
-
to category Infans
U
(features
8/96,
19/96),
while the age of
1
individual (feature
3/96)
could not be determined. Among the adults, age-at-death
could be precisely determined for only
4
individuals representing the Adultus category (features
5/88, 3/96,
38/96
and
32/96).
The remaining individuals were only broadly characterised as adults (features
6/89, 5/96,
12/96,17/96, 30/96).
For the analysed cemetery, the determination of sex based on charred human bones was possible for only
2
of the
10
adult individuals (feature
5/88 -
female, feature
32/96 -
male).
168
The marks left on bones by ornaments made of bronze or iron were also recorded in the analysed material
[features
5/96,17/96
and
30/96).
The results of archaeozoological analyses
In the cemetery at Gulin
Młyn,
animal bones were discovered in
23
graves. The bones were charred and mixed
with human remains. The graves represented two archaeological cultures:
17
features were attributed to the
Pomeranian culture, and
6
to the
Przeworsk
culture.
Among the material linked with the Pomeranian culture,
280
mammal bones were identified, representing
8
species. Predominant were the remains of small domesticated ruminants, namely sheep and goats. Cattle bones
were second, followed by those of a predator of the size of a fox. The anatomical distribution of cattle remains
shows that valuable parts of carcasses (the ham and blade) were often placed in graves. A similar distribution
was observed for the bones of sheep and goats, counted jointly.
Only
13
bones were identified in the
Przeworsk
culture material. These were the bones of mammals and
birds. Among the identified mammal bones were those of sheep, goats and cattle, and birds were represented
by chickens.
In general, in the Pomeranian culture, the most valuable sacrificial animals were sheep and goats, although
cattle and fox and, exceptionally, other game were also placed in graves whilst birds were not used as sacrifices.
In the
Przeworsk
culture, birds were placed in graves along with cattle and sheep, as common custom in this
culture.
Metallographic
examination of iron artefacts
The aim of the research was to identify and determine the technology used in manufacturing the artefacts from
the
Przeworsk
culture cemetery at Gulin
Młyn.
Nine iron artefacts were selected for metallographic examina¬
tion, whose metal cores were best preserved and made it possible to collect samples for
microsections.
The
analysed artefacts revealed noticeable diversity in terms of both the material and manufacturing techniques.
Some objects (samples no
4
and
9)
were made using the simplest methods, such as forging from a single piece
of bloomery iron. Other, for example a pin with a disc head (samples no 6a and 6b), are made of intentionally
chosen material, and the pin s two parts are joined by means of welding. The appropriate material, namely very
hard steel, was also selected for forging a spearhead (sample no
8).
The diversity in manufacture is particularly noticeable among the knives analysed (samples no
1, 2, 3,
and
5).
They were all forged from single pieces of metal using an unsophisticated technique, but some of them were
made of soft iron (sample no
5)
or material of a slightly higher quality (e.g. a knife made of semi-hard, uniform¬
ly carbonised steel
-
sample no
2),
while others were made of soft steel (sample no
3)
or steel with a higher
phosphorus content (sample no
1).
The performed analyses support the conclusion, proposed in the literature,
that the observed technological traits are typical for objects forged from iron obtained by means of bloomery
smelting, which cannot be unequivocally attributed to any particular
metallurgie
centre.
