(summary)
The publication of several
memorialistic
and autobiographic documents
in the present volume reveals once more a fact already confirmed by recent
research: it was customary for the Romanian hierarchs from 19th-20th century
Transylvania (Greek-Catholic hierarchs in particular) to keep journals and
write memoirs and autobiographies which withstood the passing of time.
The materials we are publishing in the present volume portray an
exceptional hierarch to whom historical research has not been very generous
so far: Victor
Mihályi
of
Apşa,
bishop of
Lugoj
from
1874
to
1895
and then
metropolitan of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church from Transylvania in
the years
1895-1918.
The first document found in the volume represents the
youth memoirs of the hierarch,

These
memorialistic
documents recommend
Victor
Mihályi
as one of
the most prolific authors of memoirs of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church
in the 19th century.
Mihályi
pursued a didactic, ecclesiastical and political-
national career of over half a century. He began his studies in Rome in the
decade following the
1848-1849
revolution
(1858)
and lived to see a series of
political regimes and phases of modernity come and go, culminating in the
First World War, at whose end he passed into eternity
(1918).
Given the fact
that he witnessed the modernization of the political structures, the society and
mentalities from Transylvania, his writings are precious documents
ofthat
age.
Nevertheless,
.
the three documents are different from the point of
view of their content and documentary relevance. Thus, if
însemnările,
which
refers to the years
1861-1872,
abounds in ecclesiastical events,
Ziarul
provides
information on the political and national history of the Transylvanian
Romanians in the 19th century as well. Autobiographia outlines
Mihályi s
ecclesiastical career up to the year
1890.
The document was found in the
archives of the Apostolic Nunciature from Vienna together with biographies
of other hierarchs and canons of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church, as
well as of other dioceses within Austria-Hungary. Also, we have reasons to
believe that the years
1872-1893, 1906-1918,
not referred to in
însemnări
and
ZiarwcK covered by
Mihályi
in other
memorialistic
writings which have not
been found yet, but may be brought to light by future research.
Victor
Mihályi s
însemnările
from
1861-1872
contains first-hand
information on the history of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church in
Transylvania at the middle of the 19th century. It deals with a variety of
topics, from aspects concerning the Ecumenical Council, events narrating the
succession to the metropolitan see in
Blaj
after the death of
Alexandru Şterca
Şuluţiu,
interventions of the metropolitan at the Hungarian government in
matters ecclesiastical and national, to local events and considerations about
human relations among the Romanian Greek-Catholic clergy from
Gherla
and
Blaj.
While ecclesiastical matters prevail in its pages, the journal also
gives information about the Romanian national movement and about various
members of the
Mihályi
family. In the journal from
1865-1872

second autographic document published
in the present volume. The original is.found, as we have,already mentioned,
among the documents coming from the Apostolic Nunciature from Vienna,
-which are now part of the Vatican Secret Archives. Other biographies of
ľ
canons and hierarchs from Austria-Hungary were found there. Two of these,
f
referring to loan Vancea and loan
Szabó,
have been published earlier. Written
in Latin and dated
22
October
1890,
Autobiographia was discovered together
with a letter of presentation addressed to Francisco Tarnassi, auditor at the
Nunciature in Vienna, on the same date. It is structured in
16
paragraphs,
numbered distinctly, and it outlines
Mihályi
s career, dwelling more on the
years when
hé
served as bishop in
Lugoj.
All the representative aspects of his
biography were systematically included so that Autobiographiamight serve as a
nucleus of a possible monograph of his ministry in
Lugoj.
Like
însemnările
from
ІШ-ШІ,
Ziarul
narrates ecclesiastical events.
However, this time they are closely intertwined with political events. Thus,
ecclesiastical information prevails, followed by political information and
-•allowing some space for other information, like the diocesan administration
fronvLugoj, the members of the
Mihályi
family, contemporaries with whom he
had contact, brief considerations about people and events from both recent and
distant past of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church. Worth noting is also the
scarcity of information about
Mihályi s
private life in the pages of the journal.
Practically, such information is reduced to his relations with other members
of his family and even this is related most of the time against a political and
ecclesiastical background.

engaged in the maintenance of the interests of his church in public life in a
political context less favourable to the Romanians (the year
1894
saw the trial
and condemnation of the heads of the
Memorandist
movement) marked by
crises and heated debates in the political and public life from Hungary, such as
the one surrounding the Catholic Autonomy Project or the formation of new
political parties, e.g. the Catholic Popular Party
{néppárt).
Ziarul
focuses on a crucial period of
Mihályi
s
ecclesiastical career
represented by his last years as bishop in
Lugoj,
the transition between
his election as metropolitan on
16
April
1893
and the validation of this
election by political authorities and his installation as metropolitan on
26
May
1895.
The historical contribution of this journal to this period is of
great importance as it represents the faithful mirror of
Mihályi s
efforts to
have his election acknowledged by the government in Budapest. This was by
far the most difficult and complicated situation surrounding the installation
of an archbishop of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church up to the First
World War. In the pages of the journal we often see
Mihályi
in Budapest,
sometimes traveling there weekly. Apart from the discussions he had with
the Prime minister, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Minister of Cults
and other officials about his appointment as metropolitan, he participated
in the meetings of the House of Magnates on the occasion of the debates
on several projects of vital importance to the Church or in various other
meetings convoked by the archbishop primate of Hungary.
The
memorialistic
ecclesiastical writings of the Romanians within the
Habsburg
monarchy are less researched than their political and literary works.
Research of this topic has barely started and more definitive conclusions will
be drawn as the texts multiply. They will attempt to answer the question: what
generated this genre with a long tradition in Europe that goes back to the
Middle Ages and what is its goal?
Nevertheless, the observations made to the few known texts lead to
several conclusions. The authors are hierarchs, metropolitans, bishops, canons,
figures who assisted them, most often their secretaries, whose aim was to pass
down to posterity their own life or version of events of the age they lived in.

They did it out of a desire to justify or legitimize a certain position or attitude
in the church (loan Vancea, Victor
Mihályi
of
Apşa,
loan
Boroş)
or in relation
with the nation they represented (Andrei
Şaguna,
Victor
Mihályi
of
Apşa).
They also did it out of a need to particularize their church in relation
with other denominations living in Transylvania, in order to define themselves
and the identity of the church they represented. Thus, the beginnings of this
genre coincide with the efforts to define the identities of the two Romanian
churches.
They did it out of a non-dissimulated historiographical intent to
provide the posterity with facts or events known only by their authors.
Their conviction that they were witnesses to important events, like I Vatican
Council, the ad limina visits, the various synods, determined these authors to
write these texts out of a need to emphasize their importance for themselves
or the group they represented.
The did it out of worldly reasons when they related visits or journeys
to Italy, France, Germany, to monuments or historical places, again with the
intention of defining their identity against that of the peoples or churches with
whom they came into contact.
Last but not least, they did it out of a natural human desire to acquire
knowledge about new places or civilizations, out of a cultural or historical
need. This brought them closely to another genre: travel writings. They wrote
out of the human need to communicate, to tell their stories convinced of their
own value and the mission they took upon themselves.
