CONTENTS In memory of Pavlo Sokhan (1926-2013) H. Papakin (Kyiv). P.S. Sokhan and the Formation of Modem Ukrainian Academic Archeography . 5 The article highlights Pavlo Sokhan’s personal contribution to the formation and development of contemporary Ukrainian archeography. Attention is focused on the activities of Sokhan in the Archeographical Commission and the creation of the Institute of Ukrainian Archeography of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, the outline of archeographical activities. The article analyzes both imple mented archeographical projects and those that have been still under development. Sources and Source Studies on the Slavic history V. Komiienko (Kyiv). Graffiti on the Fragment of the Plastering Solution of the Golden Gate in Kyiv: a New Study . 11 The article is a publication of the results of modem studies of epigraphic monuments on the part of the plastering solution from the ftinds of the National Conservation Area “St. Sophia in Kyiv”, which derives from the excavation of the Golden Gates in Kyiv in 1981. It has been established that eleven graffiti of the 11th - the first third of the 13th century have survived to the deck, as well as the sequence of these graphites. I. Yarmoshyk (Zhytomyr). “Apology” of Bemard Pretwicz as a Source on the History of the Ukrainian Cossacks in the Middle ofthe 16th century . 17 The article analyzes the activities of one of the Cossack rulers Bemard Pretwich (1500-1563). He had served
in the Polish king since 1526. He was ap pointed a head of Bar and his main task was to ensure the defense of peaceful work of the residents of the newly city and surrounding area. The article analyzes his concept of the defense of Ukrainian lands from Tatar attacks and the fight against such attacks, which contributed to the development of the military strategy and tactics of the Ukrainian Cossacks, which took place as a military state at that time. B. Pretwich’s “Apology” is an important document that reflects the situation of Ukrainian-Tatar relations in the middle of the 16Љ century, in particular in the 153040s. The memorial of B. Pretwich was written in 1550 as an excuse for the charges put forward by the Turkish sultan. The memorial shows that Turks believed that B. Pretvich was main cause of the harm and loss which they suffered on the lands of the Northern Black Sea, particularly around the castle Ochakiv and Bilgorod. Ukrainian translations of B. Pretvich’s “Apology” and historical documents related to it are added to the article. They shed extra light on the history ofthe Cos sacks and its relations with the Tatars in the middle of the 16th century, the issue of the Cossacks formation as a military state. I. Vorozhbyt (Kyiv). Timofey Florinskyi’s Business Trip Abroad in Vera Florinska’s Letters . 50 382
Contents This article deals with the publication of V. Florinska’s letters to her hus band’s father - D. Florinskyi. The letters reveal T. Florinskyi’s business trip abroad during 1886-1887, where they were together. The preface concerns the letters characteristic and highlights the content of epistolary sources: T. Florin skyi’s work on dissertation, everyday life (living, food, the day’s routine), leisure (dancing-parties, theatres, operas visits). O. Bila (Zhytomyr). The Culture and Science on the Pages of Volyn Periodic Press in the 19* - the Beginning of the 20* Centuries . 71 In the article local historical publications have been analyzed which had been on the pages of periodic press of Volyn Govemorate in the 19* - the be ginning of the 20* centuries devoted to the researches of the history of culture and science. Distinguished its thematic group by content filling and ideological tendencies, also local historical analyze of each of them has been made and de termined scientific value in the reaching local historical knowledge from the past of Volyn and Ukrainian history together. V. Khomenko (Kyiv). The Mykhaylo Hrushevskiy’s Homecoming in 1924 in the Light of Historical Sources .88 The questionof the M.S. Hryshevskiy’s returning from emigration to Soviet Ukraine is examined in the article. The historiography revision state has been briefly characterized. The issued documents and memoirs as well as the unpub lished archival sources which throw light upon this problem have
been analy zed. The conclusion about the some available resources’ groups which give the detail information about the reasons and circumstances of the historian’s re emigration has been made. O. Muzychko (Odessa). At the Root of Decolonization: the Dismantling ofMonuments to Russian Tsars in Odessa in 1917-1920s . 101 The article is a publication of sources on the history of the dismantling of the monuments to Catherine II, Alexander I and their associates in Odessa in the 1920s. The article actualizes the need for the creation of the Ukrainian space of Odessa and shows how it was pronounced even in Soviet times. Therefore, the published sources have not only scientific but also socio-political signifi cance for Ukraine. Yu. Koreniuk (Kyiv). Little-Known Documents from the Period of Dismantling Works at St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral (D. Kiplik’s Report on the Results of Dismantling Frescoes) .114 The paper is a publication of the report by D. Kiplik on the implementation of the dismantling of the frescoes of St Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral in 1936. There are analyzed the circumstances of the origin of this document and the signi ficance for the study of the history of Ukrainian medieval monumental art. Historiography and History of the Slavic Studies N. Vesels 'ka (Zhytomyr). History of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in the Studies ofPolish Historian Oleksandr Yablonovsky (1829-1913) .168 383

III The article shows the views of Olexander Yablonovsky (the Polish histo rian) on the peculiarities of Ukrainian culture, including his vision on the impact Polish culture on Ukrainian. According to the historian, important cultural achievements of the Ukrainian people - namely, the existence of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, were associated with the influence of the Polish people, carrying the culture of the west Ukrainian lands. However, the historian points to the important historical significance Mohyla both the Ukrainian and the Polish peo ple. This academy, according to O. Yablonovsky, enabled the ñirther develop ment of higher education in Ukrainian lands. A. Papakin (Kyiv). The Origin of Early Medieval Piast State: New Approaches in Modem Polish Historiography . 174 Polish historiography of the 20th century traditionally considered the problem of the emergence of early state in Poland as a process of gradual unification of Western Slavic tribes. Contemporary Polish historians show a recession from the previous views for sudden changes in the social system in the 10th Century. This article aims to inform Ukrainian readers about the changes in the Polish historiog raphy of the last 10 years on views on some aspects ofthe emergence of early Piast state, which were not yet found a reflection in the Ukrainian historiography. I. Likhtey (Uzhgorod). History of the Medieval Czech State Through the Prism of Modem Ukrainian Bohemia Studies . 185 The article
highlights the key research areas of modem Ukrainian scholars in the history of the medieval Czech State. The author notes that Ukrainian his toriography most thoroughly studied the political history of the Czech state from its formation in the second half of the 9lh century - before early 14th century, i.e. during the reign of the Prshemyslovych dynasty. In addition, Ukrainian scholars in Bohemia studies investigate the process of formation and development of Czech cities in the 13"' century, as well as the formation of class - representative monarchy in the Czech lands during the reign of the Jagiellonian dynasty. Instead, much less attention is paid to the period of reign of the Luxembourg dynasty and socio-economic situation of the Czech state in the Middle Ages. II. Potulnytsky (Kyiv). Political Activity of Mazepa Emigration in American-Canadian and French Historiography: Concepts and Context . 196 In the second half of the twentieth - at the beginning of the twenty one cen turies the problems of the so called Mazepian’s emigration played a critical role in research in the area of American, Canadian and French historiographies, being the object of professional interest for a range of leading western European and American historians. Here one can distinguish such names as the outstand ing American and Ukrainian historian and orientalist Omeljan Pritsak, Canadian professor Orest Subtelny and French investigator Dr. Iryna Dmytryschyn. All these scholars insisted on the idea that the aim of Mazepian’s emigration was to tear the peoples of Central Europe,
including the Ukrainians, away from Rus sia. They carefully and thoroughly studied the phenomenon of Mazepian’s em igration from multi-dimensional perspective. Omeljan Pritsak stressed the significance of the political activity of Grygor Orlyk, whom he named as French political leader of the Ukrainian descent. He also investigated the theoretical legal base and constitutional character of the so called “Benderian Constitution” 384
Contents (original name - “Pacts and Constitutions of Laws and Rights of Vijsko Zaporozke” - constitutional law, approved by emigrants in 1710). Orest Subtelny in the framework of his investigations of the relations of Hetman Pylyp Orlyk with the Crimean Khanate and the Ottoman Porte, in 1710-1742 evaluated the French perspective of the political activity of both Orlyk’s, especially the par ticipation of Hetmanych in the development of the Russian and Polish directions of the foreign policy of Lois XV. Iryna Dmytryshyn analyses the origin of the Cossack question within the foreign policy of French monarchy in the timeline of Louis XVs and considerably concentrates her attention on the problems of delineation of the identity of Grygor Orlyk and on research of the some frag ments of the political activity of his companions-in-arms F. Myrovych and F. Nachymovski. All the historians stressed that the main aim of the first Ukrain ian political emigration was to integrate the Cossack question into the whole structure of anti-Russian policy of the leading European countries in the time span of the first half of the eighteenth century: France, Sweden and Turkey as well as also Poland and Crimean Chanate. A. Hanul (Kyiv). Ivan Horvat as a Leader of New Serbia in Contemporary British and American Historiography . 204 The article attempts to analyze the achievements of British and American his torians over the last fifty years, which illuminate activities of Ivan Horvat as a leader of the Serbian resettlement to the territory of modem Ukraine in
the middle of the 18th century. The focus of the analysis is given on the works on the topic of the Russian Empire’s expansionism and colonization of the Eurasian Steppe. We explore the context in which Western scholars disclose the events related to the resettlement of Balkan people to the Ukrainian lands, creation of military-admi nistrative area New Serbia and Horvat’s participation in its organization. D. Hordiyenko (Kyiv). “Istoria Rusiv” in the Understanding of Borys Krupnytsky . 215 The article reveals one of the pages of the creative biography of the famous Ukrainian historian Borys Krupnytsky in the post-war period. Immediately it focuses on understanding the known political and public Ukrainian monument of the late 18th - the early 19th century “Istoria Rusiv”. В. Krupnytsky under stands the monument in comparison with the then-time work of the German historian Johann Christian von Engel “History of Ukraine and Ukrainian Cos sacks”. B. Krupnytsky does not research the issue of authorship of “Istoria Rusiv”, but proclaims the author as a Republican and adherent of the aristocratic republic. In general, the monument is presented as a work of the age of the En lightenment, and Ukrainian culture as a component of the European culture of the Enlightenment. N. Solons 'ka (Kyiv). Canadian Scientific Journal “Slavistica”: Historical Review ( 1948֊1958) . . The article is an analysis of the content and
orientation organ slavic studies Institute of Canada, established in 1948 at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, the scientific journal “Slavistica” (“Slavic Studies”), which came out in thè world, edited by outstanding Ukrainian scientist, philologist, slavic studies, folk lorist, ascetic and science manager Jaroslav Bohdan Rudnytsky. 385

In Soviet Ukraine in the early years after re ceiving its independence it was super rarely edition. It became available to pro fessionals only after J. B. Rudnytsky gave of himself present National Library of Ukraine Vernadsky (hereinafter - the Vernadsky National Library). Collec tion scientist now preserved in the collection department of foreign Ukrainka Vernadsky National Library of the Institute of Book Science. History and Culture of Slavs V. Korniienko, M. Strykhar (Kyiv). Amphora-Pot from the Excavations of T. Movchanivs’ky in the Southern Internal Gallery of St. Sophia Cathedral in 1936: Restoration and Research .244 The article is a publication of the results of the restoration and modem stud ies of the amphora-pot from the funds of the National Conservation Area “St. Sophia in Kyiv”, which derives from the excavations of T. Movchanivs’ky,
that made by him in 1936 in the hall of St. Anthony and Theodosius of Pechers’k (former southern interior gallery) of St. Sophia in Kyiv. There is a clearly lo calized a place of the discovery of an amphora during archaeological research. It is established that such amphoras were intended to store church wine and were located in the southeastern comers of the vima of the altar portions of the church, for which the section of the ancient floor was analyzed, where the lower part of the amphora was inserted. O. Dzhura (Kyiv). Teodosije’s Historic and Geographic Knowledge (Based on the Analysis of the St. Sava of Serbia Vita) .253 The report is devoted to the analysis of Teodosije’s geographical knowledge who was a Serbian hagiographer of the Medieval Ages. The historiography of the question was researched, and outlined the specific author’s view of the world: his description of the loca sancta, possible sources of the “exotic” infor mation and “scrappy-point” vision for the depicted space. In the vita, a real space could be supplemented by borrowings from the Bible or be intermingled with miracles descriptions.
