Summary
The foreword which outlines the present knowledge about the main

character of the mentioned monograph, Stefan Mauri, is followed by chapters
arranged chronologically and describing the life and work of the composer.
The prominent position among these is dedicated to the Mauri Family, which

Stefan recalls fondly and in detail. Chapters Early Childhood and Growing up
in Turbulent Times depict the time of Mauri’s childhood and youth marked
by fascism and the horrors of the Second World War. Mauri’s schooling was
multi-layered, very different from that of his (mostly urban) colleagues. After
the initial poverty which made him take up a profession immediately after
elementary school, the years of persistence and work for survival were crowned
by two almost simultaneously achieved higher education degrees in: the technical
and musical fields. His occupations and additional activities are so interesting
and diverse that they could serve as a basis for a short story, a novel or even a
screenplay. A particularly interesting chapter is An Intellectual in the Country
and on the Margin, as it describes all good and bad aspects of the situation still
experienced daily by the composer. Mauri’s life and work has always followed
the course of a traditional family, which, of course, responded to each trial in the
life of their husband and father. Mauri’s entire musical career (composing and
performing) was greatly marked by his choralism and choral conducting. It
may even be stated that most of the composer’s vocal opus derives from these two
activities. Encounters with Musicians and Cultural Workers bring a plethora
of musical and non-musical personalities whom Mauri has encountered from
the beginning of his secondary education right to the present day. As Mauri has
constantly defended his ideological affiliation with the Catholic faith, »his« God
has inspired many a part of his opus (songs, masses, choirs ...). This is naturally
portrayed in a separate chapter Spirituality. Much detailed is the description of
Mauri’s Composing, i.e. the opus for which the present book has been actually
written. The scores of his music, namely, often reveal much of that which is
unwritten, which is unspoken. Outline of Musical Opus is mostly an autonomous
musicological work of the first co-author. Chapter Opus (Catalogue: Scores ...)

brings an overview of the composer’s works with attached scores, incipits, i.e.
openings written and elaborated by Marjan Ribic and Borut Likar especially for
the present monograph. This contribution constitutes a novelty in the Slovenian
monographic musical bibliography. On the basis of this contribution, the co-
authors were able to document 140 works of the composer. This is followed by
the catalogue of sound and film recordings and the list of awards and prizes.
The monograph concludes by contributions on Mauri’s musical work by four
authors: Andrej Bratuz, Evgen Bavcar PhD, Ivo Jelercic and Luisa Antoni
PhD; the latter constitute review of this work. As a coda alias, Finale once more
presents Mauri as a person and the reflection of his personality in his artistic
creativity.
