Summary
The study Domini
naturales.
Images of Polish rulers in Chronicon Polonorum by
Master
Wincenty
consists of four chapters and is devoted to images of Polish rulers
presented in the chronicle narrations. Facts, symbols,
topos,
allegories, myths, tales,
parables, basic literary plots, motives and sentences included in the stories of Mas¬
ter
Wincenty
called
Kadłubek
were analyzed with reference to Polish and foreign
sources, the Bible and the concept of Christian authors.
The introduction is a preface of the subject; it also includes information con¬
cerning the old historiography and history understanding in medieval times, ex¬
cept for information concerning the range of research and analyzed texts. The
history writing genesis and its roles is a preparation to read Chronicon Polonorum
as a result of a complexity of a creative process, consistent to expectations of Church
authorities and patronage.
The first chapter presents the clan organization, its structure and traditions.
It presents prominent individuals and the roles of rulers. Metaphoric oration was
underlined by showing the significance of family ties. Master
Wincenty
used them
to describe the relationship between citizens and the country. The author paid spe¬
cial attention to clan traditions, which could be used to justify ethical norms, which
ruled the country. In order to present personages of prominent rulers, the hypo¬
thetical path from military expeditions to
Christos
Domini and the importance of
their duties was analyzed.
The next chapter is a detailed analysis of the rulers role, seen by the Church in
the context of their acts and the role interpretation of personages. The Bible was
a key to comprehend the social phenomenon, the assessment and wide reference
material with clues. Its authority, symbolic meaning and ethical thought were used
by Master
Wincenty;
therefore it became the necessary element of interpretation.
It would be difficult to understand the assessment of rulers acts presented by the
author and to appreciate its meaning without the religious context. The religious

background became indispensable to present the Christian knight ethos, popular¬
ized by
gesta
and chronicles. He was a scarified protector of the nation and Church
in its exclusive image, as a charismatic leader and fervent faith protector. The sig¬
nificant factor of the description of old knight ideals was a proposed image of an
ideal ruler and a warning against an abuse of authority, therefore virtues and vices
were described.
The third chapter is devoted to women, who performed serious national roles
-
mothers, daughters and wives of Polish rulers. Heroines of Chronicon Polonorum
were presented in the religious and social background, taking into consideration
their roles and functions. According to Master Wincenty s intention, the research
subject was the woman rulers, who entered the Polish history with something sig¬
nificant, either good or bad. The parallel between women form tale histories and
the history of Poland allowed to extend the use of ruler symbolic representation and
a warning appearance against sacrilegium.
In the fourth chapter, the comparison of mythical heroes with historical ones
made it possible to present reasons of the chronicle writers imperfection. Superior
raison
-
publica utilitas,
which is not forgotten by the author, justifies an intro¬
duction of literary fiction. The second part of the chapter is an analysis of a power
concept and the ruler ethos, consistent with panegyrical
topos.
The conclusion not only the summary of old theories concerning the exercise
of power but also comments to the literary frame and the moral message of Chroni¬
con Polonorum.
