Summary
Our Elder considered the proper time had come to prepare
his most precious gift for those who desire their own salvation
within these modern times. For us what else could be more
convincing and strengthening than his own life, together with his
teaching? He has offered me his precious words, allowing me
much time and demonstrating patience in order to answer many,
many questions.
Out of the gathered material, we were proposed to present
his Life as it is. As it can witnessed from his own words, without
any change or interpretation on our part. We have studied
carefully, with deep prayer and fervent supplication we have felt
and lived all the great moments of our Father s life in order to be
able to structure the whole material and give to his spiritual
testament and life its natural course.
This reverential edition, prepared in honour of the
89
years of Father
Iustin,
enjoys a very special blessing from
Archbishop Seraphim of Ottawa and Canada, Orthodox Church in
America (OCA), sole Primate and Archbishop of the second
largest archdiocese in the Orthodox world, who by the good order
of God, leaving his far away lands, from beyond the ocean, arrived
in Romania, desirous of the blessed pilgrimage to the Holy
Monastery of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel in
Petru Vodă
in order to meet Elder
Iustin
face to face. He went there to seek the
blessing of this Elder, the monastery and its life with his own
heart, since for many years wondorous things he had heard about
our simple Orthodox Elder, from one of his own disciples. The
Archbishop beheld before him a servant of Christ who had
suffered and spent oppressive years in prison for the guilt of
loving the Lord with all his mind and with all his heart. Thus
Archbishop Seraphim has great joy and piety at the issuing of this
book which presents the life and teaching of Father
Iustin,

he immediately shares, according to the parable of neighbourly
love of the Scripture, inviting the readers by the word To the
Reader, to enjoy the feast of faith of our Elder of
Petru Vodă
hoping that they will meet the Saviour Himself, by means of this
relation with Elder
Iustin.

Iustin
which comes as a beautiful continuation, within the same spirit of
faith and love towards the faithful readers.
We have structured the whole material into three parts
The Ist Part, about Father s life, contains
24
chapters, each one
being preceded by a motto, selected from Father s words as well
which presents the essence of the whole chapter. The chapters of
the Ist Part follow a logical order, the words flow covering our
Father s whole life, starting with the Ist Chapter, Childhood, with
the atmosphere of the village, with the relations between people,
the sense of responsibility of ones towards others, starting as little
children, with the children s integration among the grown
ups,
receiving and assuming responsibilities, living a Christian life
together with the adults
-
including fast, confession, canon from
the priest for spiritual strengthening, Eucharist. Father
Iustin
speaks about family durablity and its importance in the life of the
village. Mother has the greatest responsibility in family life and
child education. Having neither psycho-pedagogical training nor
high education, but having much love and responsibility, offering
her own example, mother Ann grows her children up in the spirit
of loving the neighbor, she cultivates the joy of offering, she
cultivates faith, prayer, she takes her children to monastery
services, she asks for advice and obeys her father confessor. From
his mother, he has acquired all the good things. Based on her own
deeds, within family life, mother forms and cultivates the love of
God by prayers and the presence in the holy Church. Mother
directed him to the monastery at the proper time. He has learned
the love for his nation from his mother as well. That love has
withstood well the difficult periods of his life. His mother s image
together with her love and deeds, has remained the deepest mark
of Father Iustin s personality, the living icon of his soul. Along

difficult times of imprisonment and persecution, mother is the
example and strengthening and responsibility for him. Mother is
the most important element of life, so that, when he tells us about
the present times, about the degraded state of society, he clearly
shows us the cause of this situation
-
we lack saint mothers.
Joining the Monastery, described in the 2nd Chapter, came
naturally from the education he received from his mother and from
the close relation with the monastic father confessors, from
attending the services of the monastery. Father
Iustin
hasn t
started a new life in the monastery, but he followed his second life
stage suited to the living education received from mother and
suited to his soul, agreeing to humble himself and subdue to
obedience his full of energy nature according to our Saviour s
example.
The meekness and love within which he was grown up
received the most cruel and devilish struck through those people
possessed with devils who performed the Arrest presented in the
3rd Chapter. That happened at midnight, being taught in this way
that the good and the bad ones are chosen only thus, depending on
the way they behave to their neighbors. Father
Iustin
shows us the
goodness of God, Who has given people the liberty of choosing
the way of this earthly life, on which our entire eternity and that of
our descendants depends: Any sin must be redeemed as we can
learn from the 4th Chapter, Prison. Then he felt the greatest help
through the high morality and education he had received from his
mother and he directed his entire hope to God, through prayer. In
those conditions he learned the meaning of true humility, true
prayer and the deepest faith. He was descended into hell, he lived
in the communist hell of jails for

years. When he learned that
there was no escape, there were torments everywhere and the
denunciators were among them, he set his soul free and he lived
the deepest prayers, the purest monasticism
-
circumstances which
are described in the 5 th Chapter, The Spiritual High School.
In the 6th Chapter, Communism in Romania, Father
describes the way he knew what communism was, with the
overturning of the value system, as the great intellectual values of

our nation were guilty of being very precious and they were
tortured by the illiterate ones of the nation who could neither read,
nor write, nor sum up, but they were good, reliable communists ,
they knew how to sell their fellow creatures, how to torture them
mercilessly, receiving rich reward for that. The cruelty of those
dark minds proves that they agreed to be the servants of the devil,
they have created the saints of jails.
The 7th Chapter, Coming Back Home, presents Father to us
as being victorious; he bore his unjust sentence with dignity. He
comes back home to his mother s, who had been his spiritual
strengthening along the hard years of imprisonment, but she
cannot recognize him. So she reposed, without knowing that her
youngest and most beloved son was alive and came back home.

Iustin
was set free again but he has been pursued and
harassed by the Security everywhere, every time and in different
ways. Father has been put aside and pursued for long and this
situation continues today as well. The 8th Chapter, Back to the
Monastery, tells us about coming back to the monastery, which
took place in
Secu
Monastery, about the people belonging to
Security, who were infiltrated everywhere and were following to
catch every word, every movement, only the thoughts remained to
be known. Afterwards, he lived in
Bistriţa
Monastery for fourteen
years, then back to
Secu
Monastery for about two years, after
which, in
1991,
he has come to
Petru Vodă
village in order to
found the monastery with the dedication day Saint Archangels
Michael and Gabriel , about which we learn in the 9th Chapter,
Petru Vodă
Monastery. Father tells us about raising the church,
the cells and other buildings, but also about the great father
confessors he knew, about the importance of the father confessor
in the Christian s life, about keeping in touch with the believers
while he was at
Bistriţa.
Within the pains and torments applied in prisons along the

years his belief in God strengthens as the only support and the
only sense of life. The sufferings in prison have formed and
strengthened his love of people, of those tired and tormented ones
whom he encourages from morning till later than

night time, unreservedly fulfilling his sacrifice of a missionary of
the Church of Christ.
We can feel that Father has no resentment towards those
who tortured and pursued him all the time, but he is sad because
he is kept away now too, that those communists of special merits,
or those who belonged to the repressive system, or the descendants
of those who lived in a communist way within family, rule today
as well, behind the mask of some party,
-
they rule, being
beneficiaries of all the advantages, money, relations and the
people lack jobs, they fly away on foreign lands for some piece of
bread, they are blasphemed and humiliated everywhere, they have
come up to steal, to become wild, to lose their hope. These
miserable people come to Father
Iustin
for a good word, some
consolation, some prayer. Such people surround Father
Iustin
warmly. People from everywhere, from the country or from far
away lands look for him, but the other people continue keeping
him aside. Patiently, righteously and loving people, Father
Iustin
passes spiritually from being put away by some, to self sacrifice
for the others. Out of the darkness in which he was thrown by the
Judases of this nation, by means of faith and prayer, God has
raised him as a light to the help of crowds of believers. You can
see why, Believers in Front of the Door of Father

delivers his proper sermon and parable for everyone.
In the Chapter number
11,
My Romanian Nation, Father
Iustin
explains us what the nation is, a nation must exist within
continuity, unity, it must be connected by love, it must be lightened
by faith, he speaks to us about the great values of our nation
-
about faith, about the history of our people, about the land of our
people, about our country.
In the 12th Chapter, A Generation of Martyrs and
Confessors, Father
Iustin
tells us gratefully about the martyrs and
confessors of the Romanian nation of the time of the communist
hell. He explains the power of sacrifice for faith of the young
generation of intellectuals of great value of our nation. Their
sufferings were greater than those of the former Christian

He tells us the Legionary Movement was a movement of
revival of our Orthodox Christianity or a movement of
regeneration of the spirituality of our nation.
The 13th Chapter, The Romanians and the Church, shows
us the importance of our Christian Orthodox Church in the life of
our nation and of our family, as the genius, the hero, the martyr
but also the unfounded man is formed within family life. It tells us
about the importance of confessing and keeping the right faith,
about the importance of the father confessor in family life,
continuing in the 14th Chapter, On Child Growing up, with the
symbol of trinity
-
father, mother and child
-
in the Christian
family, with the equilibrium of mother who grows the child up,
being a good example in everything. But at present time we lack
saint mothers for giving birth to saints, heroes, martyrs,
intellectuals, genii in order to direct our people far away. There
follows Chapter 15th, About Death, from which we learn that it is
very important to be afraid of sin, as it brings death. Sufferings
come from sins, that is why we should find the right way in life.
Out of the

Chapter, Monachism of Our Time, we learn that it
does not rise at the level of that one of the former centuries,
because this
élite,
which direct their steps to the monastic life, is
the product of the society we live in, about which we learn from
Chapter 17th, Romanians Emancipation , from which we also
learn that those who rule the society are the product of the
secularized society, in which lie, superficiality, relativity dominate
and that is why God turns His face from us. In Chapter
18 ,
Modern Times, Father
Iustin
tells us about the moving away of
mankind from the moral values of the Church and of our nation,
about deepening the untrust, despair and sinking into impetuous
passions such as drinking, drugs, manifesting a severe crises of
modern man.
In the 19th Chapter, Christian Orthodox Orders, Father
shows us the way for soul calming down by means of fasting,
confessing, Eucharist. He tells us about the risks of ignoring
spiritual advice, about commemorating the dead, about family.
In the 20th Chapter, the Revival of the Romanian People,

strengthens us, giving us the hope that if Romania is
recovering its senses now, if it becomes intensely right and it
fights for its Christian life and rights, it may certainly be
victorious one day. The salvation of the Romanian nation would
be its moral recovering according to the teaching of the Church,
the fight against passions within us, the renewal of our spiritual
life and coming back to our original way.
The 21st Chapter, Father Gheorghe
Calciu,
contains
documents connected to his death and the speaches delivered on
his burial, which took place in the cemetery of
Petru Vodă
Monastery.
The last three chapters of the Ist Part are very important.
Chapter 22nd, The Dedication of the Church of the Monastery
represents a special moment within monastic life; it presents the
speaches delivered on that occasion by the Metropolitan Daniel
and by Father
Iustin.
The Chapter 23rd, Founder and Missionary,
lets us know the foundations that Father
Iustin
has founded to the
memory and in honour of the martyrs of the Romanian people, as
dwellings in which they should be mentioned for their sacrifice.
Father
Iustin
has also supported editing some books of memories
and confessions, as well as magazines of great spiritual value.
In the 24th Chapter, Meditations on My Life, Father tells us
about the essential importance his mother s high morality had in
his spiritual forming and strengthening for faith and for all the
hardships caused by the Judases of that century, and he also
confesses that he has felt almost all the time being left away, he
tells us about the hard times to come, in which the faithful s
escape must be in prayer, Psalter, the Holy Scripture and the Lives
of our martyrs. Then, he gives us a bit of confession apologizing
publicly for he had judged.
Father
Iustin
also urges all those who love him as well as
those who don t love him, to come and meet him, to see the
Orthodox order in
Petru Vodă
Monastery and everything the
Father has built with the help of the faithful. All those who want to
share the teachings of Father
Iustin
with the others are invited to
come and see everything. He tells us about the order in the

arranged in logical and historical order since man s falling until
heaven or death.
The mrd Part, Maxims and Spiritual Thoughts is destined
to synthetize Father
Iustin

theological and spiritual thinking.
While reading, they urge us to meditate and feel in our mind and
heart their charge of great spiritual depth. This Part gives new
meanings, strengthening better on Father s teaching, using
sentences of Orthodox faith.
The conclusion which Father leaves is: Let us love one
another, that with mind we may confess: Father, Son and the Holy
Spirit, Trinity
consubstanţial
and undivided. Amen!
The material is accompanied by many footnotes which
come to strengthen and explain our Elder s confessions and
teachings, underlining the objective character of the confessions
given in numerous books by those who suffered tortures,
opressions, persecutions, pursuits along a whole stage of our
people s history

régime.
Our Father s confessions throw new light upon certain
