ABSTRACT
Traían Herseni
is a prodigious exponent of the Bucharest
Sociological School, representing a permanent intellectual mark for the
history of Romanian social thought, his work being a testimony over
time to the topicality of the themes treated along his scientific career.
As one of Dimitrie Gusti's disciple,
Traían Herseni
dedicated his
scientific life to disseminate specialized information both from his
master's perspective, but also from his own original one. According to
this own words, he was „a sort of propagandist"" of the School, who
tried to contribute
-
through his writings
-
to the consolidation of
sociology as a science, as well as to opening it to the new horizons of
branch sociology. Because „at very short intervals Traian Herseni offers
us, as some pleasant gifts, high quality scientific books, almost each of
them shaping new horizons in the Romanian sociology. Nobody could
deny today that we owe to Traian Herseni some of the books without
which the space of our sociological investigation would be a lot more
narrow and infertile. And this is due to, among others, one of the
fundamental traits of these books, namely their openness: they all are
incentives to a follow-up, to more ample and profound constructions*'
(Şerban,
1977: 8).
This openness is due to a remarkable vocation of
transdisciplinarity that one could constantly note in the hersenian work,
and it is a result of the researches he realized in various scientific areas
such as sociology, social psychology, cultural anthropology,
ethnography, ethnology, etc.
The book will explore two major issues. The first one is dedicated
to the biographical and
publicistic
hersenian profile, but also to
important moments of the scientist's professional itinerary (First Part).
The second one aims to point out different aspects of Traian Herseni's
work, in which the theoretical combines naturally with the field work,
profiling two important dimensions of his writings, namely the
sociological and the anthropological. Our approach will focus mainly on
these two issues (Second Part).

Biographical Profile

proposes a radiography of
Herseni's professional path beginning with primary school and ending
with his professional accomplishment as a teacher. In his long teaching
career he acted both as a teacher and as a friend, developing friendship
relations with students and collaborators who shared his passion for
researching the Romanian social reality.
Chapter
2. -
A Prolific Contributor to Cultural Journals
-
outlines Traian Herseni's journalistic profile as a constant contributor to
the cultural periodicals of the time. Taking into account the great
diversity of the journals and hence the variety of the themes he
approached, one can obviously remark the very complexity of Herseni's
thought. In order to framework his journalistic activity and to point out
the large area of his scientific interest, the chapter presents a journalistic
series organized into two plans, namely the interwar and post war
periods. It is evidently that his journalistic activity is an impressive one
due to the great number of articles and studies he published (about
543)
and to the fact that he was capable of „writing fast" having always the
data needed in order to compose his scientific texts.

concisely the systemic dimension of sociology, which manifests itself
mainly in a profound correlation between the sociological theory and the
empirical research, continuously focused in Traian Herseni's works.
Constantly preoccupied with the rural issues, Traian Herseni is the
founder of Romanian rural sociology, which he tried to profile in his
works and to give an intrinsic research horizon, introducing a
sociological imaginary characterized both by diversity and
comprehensiveness.

The Epistemology of Pastoral Sociology

is a
description of the field investigations conducted under the auspices of
the Bucharest Sociological School, which offered to Traian Herseni the
necessary framework for elaborating his own approach to rural
sociology. He materialized it as a branch of the former one, more
precisely as pastoral sociology, also named „differential sociology".

describes Traian
Herseni's complex personality which implemented a new direction in
sociology, namely the organizational psycho-sociology. In this area he
created new approaches to the industrial enterprise.

synthesizes the
main dimensions of the hersenian work: noological realism and
interparadigmaticał
vision.
Instead of Conclusions we affirm that Traian Herseni's writings
constitute, at the junction between empirical and theoretical, between
erudition and systematization, a representative work for sociology and
anthropology, offering within the modern Romanian culture the profile
of an exceptional thinker.
Diversity and Originality
The Bucharest Sociological School constituted a scientific,
sociological and cultural movement as well through its team researches,
as through individual writings, part of an original diversity and a diverse
originality.
Trying to objectively sum-up the work of the Sociological School
members, we notice that the first form of diversity is the double
dimension of their works, which integrate into the scientific spirit of the
School as elaborations within the gustian model, on one hand, and
which are original individual writings that took into consideration more
or less the above mentioned model, on the other hand. Traian Herseni
wasn't an exception to this situation. On the contrary he illustrated it
both as a field researcher in the gustian team and as an individual
researcher, through studies and papers which configure the originality of
his scientific approach.
Traian Herseni is known within the Monographical School as one
of its most fertile authors. If in the
1940s
he elaborated the synthesis
specific to the Monographic School, the
1970s
represent the peak of his
career as a scientist, due to the fact that in this period he offered wide
and memorable synthesis to the Romanian culture. Between the two
periods there are continuities and differences which constitute the stake
of his orientation towards diversity and originality. But both the
originality and the diversity of the sociological and anthropological
work of Traian Herseni could be summarized in a few directions of his
scientific activity:

A rich sociological journalistic activity, structured in studies,
articles, chronicles, reviews, which give us the true dimension of the
hersenian thought.

His participation to the monographic campaigns
(1927-1939),
which belong to the specific traits and spirit of the monographic school.
3.
A purely theoretical direction of his thought and activity, which
place him in the current of the systematic Romanian sociology.

A new direction of Traian Herseni'
s
sociological work is to be
retrieved in cultivating branch sociologies: rural sociology, sociology of
language, sociology of literature, industrial sociology, all these being
characterized through the exhaustive treatment of the problems, as well
on the bibliographical level as on the discursive level, communicating
the capacities of the sociological hersenian imaginary.

The anthropological dimension offers us simultaneously a
vision on the interdisciplinary thought of Traian Herseni.

From a paradigmatic approach, Traian Herseni belongs to the
paradigm of noological realism, making substantial synthesis between
the empirical realism of the monographic sociology and the spirit of the
phenomenological sociology. Concerning this issue, we discover notes
regarding existentialism, because our sociologist and anthropologist
studied the society, as himself testifies, „not only as essence, but also as
existence".
Hence, each of the mentioned directions excels through diversity
and originality and places Traian Herseni's work into a privileged
position as well in the frame of the Monographic
Scholl
as in the larger
horizon of Romanian sociology, which his writings represent at original
altitudes.
