11952, a State of Ëmergency was îritishruled Kenya, in lorder to suppress an uprising within the colony’s largest tribe, the Kikuyu. Calling for Freedom and Land”, the rebels - known as Mau Mau ֊ sought to achieve domination of their tribe before turning on their white rulers. The authorities swiftly put down the military threat, but in the process detained without į trial some 100,000 Kikuyu suspected of having taken bloodthirsty Mau Mau oaths. Fort Hall was the key location in the Kikuyu heartland where tribal chiefs and Special Branch interrogators decided on the fate of nearly 70,000 detainees. The Special Branch Inspector at the heart of the operation, Ken Lees, tells his story now, sixty years after the last of his detainees was released. Having heard thousands of confessions, he calculates that Mau Mau killed tens of thousands of fellow Kikuyu in their bid for poweret most current historians believe there were only 2-3,000 victims. David Elstein analyzes the available archive documents, along with expert and anecdotal evidence, , in order to answer the question of how many Kikuyu were murdered by Mau Mau. He concludes that resistance , to what Ken Lees has to say reflects a disturbing reluctance amongst historians and politicians to acknowledge what the original official investigation into the origins af Mau Mau called “a holocaust”. Cover design by Grace Fussell Studio After national service in Ma three years as a police inspec in Kenya and serving as plebi supervisory officer in Southern Cameroons, Ken Lees resumed his civilian career in data management.
Emigrating to Australia, he became a senior manager for Fujitsu. He lives in Canberra with his wife, Freda. They have been married for 57 years.
