Samuel Krachmalnick
Samuel Krachmalnick (1926,
St. Louis – April 1, 2005,
Burbank, California ) was an American
conductor and music educator. He first came to prominence as a conductor on Broadway during the 1950s, notably earning a
Tony Award nomination for his work as the music director of the original production of
Leonard Bernstein 's ''
Candide ''. He went on to work as a busy conductor of
opera s and
symphony orchestra s internationally during the 1960s and 1970s. He was particularly active in New York City, where he held conducting posts with the
American Ballet Theatre , the
Harkness Ballet , the
Metropolitan Opera , and the
New York City Opera . His later career was primarily devoted to teaching on the music faculties of the
University of Washington and the
University of California, Los Angeles .
