SUMMARY
In the early eighteenth century, when Russia was going
through a turbulent period of Peter the Great’s reforms,
a tapestry manufactory was established in St Petersburg,
which laid the foundation for a new type of artistic pro-
duction in Russia. Since a staff of qualified professionals
was needed, weavers from the Gobelins Royal Manufac-
tory were invited, who arrived in St Petersburg from Par-
is in 1717. They included Philippe Behagle Sr., who was
to take charge of the manufactory, his son Philippe and
nephew Louis. Among others were specialists supervised
by Pyotr Kamus and his four apprentices as well as Ivan
Burdeyn. According to a special clause in their contracts,
they had to pass knowledge to their Russian students. In
the first years of its life the manufactory existed in name
only since there was neither a production site nor looms
nor raw materials available. In 1719-1723 most of French
weavers returned to France. Philippe Behagle Jr., who
took over the manufactory after his father’s death, Louis
Behagle and Noel Ronson, Kamus’s apprentice, all stayed
in St Petersburg.
In 1719 Ivan Kobylyakov and Trofim Buynakov be-
came the first Russian apprentices to come to the man-
ufactory. A few years later over twenty students were
already on the payroll. Step by step, they were acquir-
ing the necessary skills. Having started with small orna-
mental tapestries for furniture, they proceeded to more
complicated works featuring birds, animals and people.
A substantial number of tapestries were produced in
the 1730s - 1740s, with the most important details exe-
cuted by Behagle himself. It was during that period that
some fine ensembles were created, including tapestries
still decorating the Assembly Hall in Peterhof.
The second half of the eighteenth century was the time
when the manufactory reached its zenith. In 1764
a charter was approved, which outlined its resources,
staff and goals for the whole second half of the centu-
ry. The manufactory was financially stable, with large
amounts of fabric in stock and enough weavers to pro-
duce vast numbers of tapestries. Artistic supervision was
provided by professors of the Academy of Arts, namely
Gavriil Kozlov, Ivan Akimov and Ivan Tupolev. Rus-
sian tapestry weaving showcased stylistic trends of the
time. In the second half of the century the manufacto-
ry boasted an impressive variety of products, including
tapestry sets, works showing Biblical and mythological
scenes as well as paintings by renowned artists. During
the rule of Catherine the Great, the great artistic qua-
lity of the products and the mastery of their makers were
highly distinguished: tapestries were used not only as
decorations at imperial residences, but also as diplo-
matic gifts. In the second half of the century, a plenitude
of floor carpets was produced to decorate imperial pa-
laces, with an ornamental design matching the interiors.
The experience of work management, variety of pro-
ducts and apprentices sent by private individuals to study
tapestry weaving largely contributed to the development
of Russian carpet making in the eighteenth - nineteenth
century, taking it to a higher professional level. The manu-
factory was closed down in the mid-nineteenth century. |
