EXCESSIVE INTERNET USE.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The knowledge of man s functioning in the virtual environment is relatively
new and limited. It results from studies devoted to Internet use that not for all
Internet users the adventure experienced in the network is positive. Research
results show explicitly that in the behaviors of part of the Internet users prob¬
lems can be observed which are the consequence of excessive involvement in
the Internet use, i.e. psychological, social problems which occur in school
and/or on the job

And although the proponents of unlimited access to the network consider that
the uproar created by researchers is a vilification of this new medium still in
light of the recent data it is difficult to agree with them. Knowledge about exces¬
sive Internet use is still insufficient, and research devoted to it is rare. Never¬
theless, also in Poland attempts have been made to study this phenomenon
and/or pointing to indicating its results, both individual and social.
The number of those using the Internet increases year by year, and it can
be supposed that part of them may use the Internet in an uncontrolled way. In
such a situation it seems to be necessary to get to know the scale of the phe¬
nomenon of excessive Internet use and extending the knowledge on its etiology,
mechanism of the developmental process of

and maintenance, consequences
and outcomes. In the face of shortage of reliable knowledge on the problem, it is
difficult to create effective programmes of primary and secondary intervention and
to efficiently provide treatment to those who use the Internet excessively.
The aim of this research project has not been to depreciate the propitious
role which the Internet can perform in the life of its users. It was an attempt to
challenge the problem of dysfunctional use of the Internet, or using the Internet
in a manner which would be uncontrolled and leading to negative consequences
in the functioning of its users.Projecting and realising my research, I put for-

ward a goal of the most comprehensive capturing of the problem. This was dic¬
tated by the character of the problem explored and the present state of knowl¬
edge in the research area discussed, which is still insignificant and not only in
Poland. I have made an attempt at generating the image of the phenomenon of
excessive Internet use and indicating the factors which are essentially con¬
nected with its development and persisting. In the material presented in this
book the most important conclusions flowing from the theoretical analyses con¬
ducted and from empirical studies are included.
Understanding the specificity of problems which appear in persons who ex¬
cessively use the Internet as well as their psychological factors requires bringing
closer the context in which Internet users function. In this connection, presen¬
tation of the material begins with a relatively comprehensive psychological
characteristics of the Internet understood as a specific, virtual environment in
which man functions. It takes into account both the global features of the
Internet such as features of particular dimensions of the net (WWW, chat, dis¬
cussion forums and the like). Problems discussed in the first part of the work,
apart from the psychological characterisation of cyberspace, also encompass a
short historical outline of the development of the Internet, definitions of the
basic terms used in the book as well as data concerning ways of using the
Internet by Poles.
Chapter Two is devoted to the discussion of the main problems connected
with the phenomenon of excessive Internet use, which are debated in the lit¬
erature of the subject. Therefore, the problems touched upon in it include the
issue of the scale of the problem as well as theoretical framework and terminol¬
ogy used to study the observed phenomenon. In this chapter the author also
presented the effects of excessive Internet use and proposals of diagnostic crite¬
ria which can be found in the literature. The chapter is concluded with the
presentation of the Cognitive-Behavioral Model of Pathological Internet Use as
devised by Davis
(2001).
Since the theoretical proposal of the author was a
point of departure for studies conducted within this research project, I decided
to present comprehensively its main assumptions.
The fundamental theoretical assumptions which became a basis of design¬
ing and conducting empirical studies, are presented in Chapter Three. In it I
presented a definition and diagnostic criteria of the phenomenon which are used
in the research of this subject as well as proposals modifications of Davis s model
(2001),
and the changes made were interpreted in the theoretical context. This
allowed to formulate the main research problems undertaken in the project. In
Chapter Three I also presented a constructed scheme of the image of the structure
of variables, operational definitions of particular variables and a short characteri¬
sation of measures used for their measurement. In the final part of Chapter Three
is also presented a scheme and characterisation of the studied group.
In Chapter Four I presented results of empirical studies and discussion of
the effects of these studies. In the first part are presented results of partial
analyses. Part two of the chapter was devoted to the presentation of results of
research conducted in order to generate a model of the phenomenon of exces¬
sive Internet use. This chapter is concluded with the proposal of a model of the
phenomenon and discussion of the results obtained.
