SUMMARY The core of this illustrated publication is a description of one of the biggest museum collections of “eulogias in bottles” in Russia. The word “eulogia” (εύλογία) means “a blessing” in the Greek language. In the Christian tradition this term is used for pilgrimage souvenirs. This books focus is on unusual eulogias - those in the form of glass vessels containing carved three-dimensional compositions created either entirely of wood or with paper icons made on a printing press (in Europe and the USA - “Cross in a Bottle”, “Bottle cross”, “Bottle crucifixion with Symbols”). As can be derived from the definition of the term, not all glass vessels with Christian compositions inside can be called “eulogias”, but only the ones that were originally created as souvenirs meant for pilgrims. However, from the point of view of scientific classification, all of such vessels are part of the “vessels with a secret” group (in Europe and the USA ֊ “Impossible object” or “Patience bottles”), which the authors offer to call “vessels with assembled constructions inside them”. The tradition of creating eulogias in bottles had been developing in Russia as a handicraft of its own till 1917. Having almost entirely disappeared after the October Revolution, this part of Russian material and spiritual culture has slipped out of the researchers’ focus. Nowadays studying bottles with carved three-dimensional Christian installations inside is difficult due to the limited amount of reliable data about their origin and development. By means of this publication, about 90 items from more than 30
Russian museum collections and 40 items from private collections are introduced for the first time as objects of general scientific research. The book consists of several parts. The preface tells about the Mikhail V. Frunze History and Art Memorial Museum located in the town of Shuya, where at the moment the biggest in Russia museum collection of eulogias in bottles is exhibited. In addition, it is in the preface where the authors offer their classification of vessels with a secret. The relevant theoretical and methodological matters are examined in the first part of the book. The authors believe that the Russian handicraft of making eulogias in bottles is a part of the world cultural heritage but with its own aesthetic characteristics and artistic modes. Developing on Russian soil, the eulogia handicraft not only absorbed the specifics of the Russian Orthodox tradition, but also became a remarkable element of the national tradition of creating vessels with a secret. The book is devoted to studying such matters as authorship, the time and place of producing, as well as the technology of assembling eulogias in glass bottles. The second part of the book examines the question of evolution of eulogias in bottles in Russia. The authors have classified the vessels available to them (including those from the Sergiev-Posad group and from the group of unknown authorship) and identified the main groups of these objects. The authors looked at the eulogias in bottles in their unity, as the attribution of these items should include not only the analysis of the internal composition, but
also the attribution of the glass vessels themselves due to the fact that a eulogia cannot be dated earlier than the vessel itself was made. The last part of the book presents a catalogue of the eulogias in bottles from the collection of the Mikhail V. Frunze History and Art Memorial museum in the town of Shuya. It also includes three items from the collection of the Konstantin Balmont Literature and Local History Museum located in Shuya. The catalogue has been created as a model for collectors and museum specialists. This section is intended for professionals as well as for all those who would like to take a closer look at the issue of icon compositions in vessels, the issue still posing a number of unanswered questions as it is. The authors’ search for the lost handicraft of making eulogias in glass vessels has been in progress for several years. By completing this book the authors in no way put an end to exploring the issue in question since there still exist groups of items that remain unstudied. 249
