Referee of a Dirty Ugly Game is a memoir tracing the life and times of Ahmed Issack Hassan, the first Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) under the new Constitution of Kenya 2010. Hassan traces back his early life, schooling and career, until he is catapulted into a role that would change his life forever. His narrative details the events that have shaped Kenyas multiparty democracy from a ‘referees’ point of view, in a country that has borne, and continues to bear the brunt of unmitigated political ambition. It depicts a Chair of an electoral body who did not suffer fools gladly but stood his ground despite mounting pressure, and at an enormous personal cost. It is the story of a Chair who fought to uphold the rule of law and to protect the dignity of the public institution he led. It is a raw, unfiltered, and pulsating read - one that will definitely demand a re-read. Until the lion learns to speak, the tales of hunting will be weak. In this memoir, Hassan speaks for himself and his commission in a way only he can. The Author Ahmed Issack Hassan is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over two decades of practical experience in legal practice, public service, and election administration. He served as a commissioner in the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission (CKRC) which drafted the new Constitution for Kenya. Thereafter, he became the first Chairperson of both the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). He continues to practice law in Nairobi and has
been involved in international consultancy work in elections with organisations like the United Nations (UN), International IDEA, and the African Union (AU), in Somalia, Afghanistan, Namibia, and South Sudan. He has documented his work in election administration and the constitution-making process of Kenya and Somalia on his website, www.ahmedissackhassan.com.
