Zusammenfassung: | Jezebel's sexual lasciviousness, Mammy's devotion, and Sapphire's outspoken anger -- these are among the most persistent stereotypes that black women encounter in contemporary American life. Hurtful and dishonest, such representations force African American women to navigate a virtual crooked room that shames them and shapes their experiences as citizens. Many respond by assuming a mantle of strength that may convince others, and even themselves, that they do not need help. But as a result, the unique political issues of black women are often ignored and marginalized. In this groundbreaking book, Melissa V. Harris-Perry uses multiple methods of inquiry, including literary analysis, political theory, focus groups, surveys, and experimental research, to understand more deeply black women's political and emotional responses to pervasive negative race and gender images. Not a traditional political science work concerned with office-seeking, voting, or ideology, Sister Citizen instead explores how African American women understand themselves as citizens and what they expect from political organizing. Harris-Perry shows that the shared struggle to preserve an authentic self and secure recognition as a citizen links together black women in America, from the anonymous survivors of Hurricane Katrina to the current First Lady of the United States. |

Harris-Perry shows that the shared struggle to preserve an authentic self and secure recognition as a citizen links together black women in America, from the anonymous survivors of Hurricane Katrina to the current First Lady of the United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="t">"The hurricane," from Their eyes were watching God /</subfield><subfield code="r">Zora Neale Hurston --</subfield><subfield code="t">"The Bridge poem" /</subfield><subfield code="r">Kate Rushin --</subfield><subfield code="t">Crooked room --</subfield><subfield code="t">Myth --</subfield><subfield code="t">"Resisting the shame of Shug Avery," from The color purple /</subfield><subfield code="r">Alice Walker --</subfield><subfield code="t">Shame --</subfield><subfield code="t">Disaster --</subfield><subfield code="t">"No mirrors in my Nana's house" /</subfield><subfield code="r">Sweet Honey in the Rock, lyrics by Ysaye Maria Barnwell --</subfield><subfield code="t">Strength --</subfield><subfield code="t">God --</subfield><subfield code="t">"Praise song for the day" /</subfield><subfield code="r">Elizabeth Alexander --</subfield><subfield code="t">Michelle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">African American women</subfield><subfield code="x">Politics and government.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">African American women</subfield><subfield code="x">Political activity.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">African American women</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychology</subfield><subfield code="x">Political aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Stereotypes (Social psychology)</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">African American women</subfield><subfield code="x">Social conditions.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Noires américaines</subfield><subfield code="x">Activité politique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Noires américaines</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychologie</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect politique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Stéréotypes</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Noires américaines</subfield><subfield code="x">Conditions sociales.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Women's Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">African American women</subfield><subfield code="x">Political activity</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">African American women</subfield><subfield code="x">Social conditions</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Stereotypes (Social psychology)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">dissertations.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Academic theses</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Academic theses.</subfield><subfield code="2">lcgft</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026039</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Thèses et écrits académiques.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvmgf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Harris-Perry, Melissa V. Includes bibliographical references and index. Jezebel's sexual lasciviousness, Mammy's devotion, and Sapphire's outspoken anger -- these are among the most persistent stereotypes that black women encounter in contemporary American life.
