adam_text | READING GUIDE AND TABLE OF CONTENTS Foreword 1 Preface 3 This book delves into the human voice, both spoken and sung, with breathing as an essential element. Voice teachers, actors, singers, public speakers and other voice professionals such as Otolaryngologists (ENTs) and speech therapists will find specific analysis as well as how-to information in the later parts of the book, but the first nine chapters provide the foundation. They offer specific practical information, as well as fascinating context, for those both inside and outside the world of voice. Many of you are reading this because you have an interest in optimal breathing. This may be for application to highperformance athletics, living with COPD, stress management, or anything else that is impacted by the quality of respiration... so basically, any aspect of life. The first part of the book is humbly offered to the pulmonary physicians and respiratory therapists, among many others, who are on the front lines. As a critical part of our attention to the voice, we ll be exploring a non-medical practice that has received great interest and enthusiasm from both medical and non-medical professionals beginning many decades ago. Yet, the practice is still virtually unknown outside of Switzerland. But this is changing. In the short time since the publication of this book in 2015 for French-language Phd-level voice specialists, a burgeoning demand requires that we bring this to the larger English-speaking audience and make the information more accessible while maintaining the necessary precision. Acknowledgments 4
Prologue 6 їх
PART ONE Addressing the most foundational, yet largely misunderstood, elements for healthy breathing as well as healthy voice production, Part One is also for you in the group of not-so-interested-in-thevoice readers. Healthy voice production is inextricably linked to optimal breathing. Chapter 1 - The Human Voice 7 Chapter 2 - Finding the Best Approach to Vocal Technique 10 Chapter 3 - The Universal Breath 21 Chapter 4 - Carl Stough and the Conception of Breathing Coordination 29 Chapter 5 - Lynn Martin Provides the Bridge 50 PART TWO The original practice of Breathing Coordination had to be refined into a clear practice based on such rock solid foundations as Functional Anatomy and Ideokinesis in order to be effectively understood, replicated and disseminated. As this story unfolds, it will also lead us into a precise understanding of the widely misunderstood concept of support , as well as a few other clarifying elements. Part Two culminates in two diverse healthrelated case studies. Chapter 6 - My Professional Path 70 Chapter 7 - Functional Anatomy Explains Breathing, Support, and Absorption 77 Chapter 8 - Martin De Haas Breathing Coordination: Building the Training Program x 94
Chapter 9 - M.D.H.B.C. Case Studies Beyond the World of Voice 99 PART THREE As we move further into the voice, we bring in two additional coordinations. While the terminology below may be somewhat daunting to some, I encourage you to continue on as I trust all will be made clear, or at least clear enough to be useful to those interested in effective speech for themselves, as well as those involved in the vocal instruction of others. Chapter 10 - Discovering the Vocal Cords and Resonators 110 Chapter 11 - The Speaking Voice: Laryngeo-Pharyngeal Coordination 127 Chapter 12 - Case Studies in Laryngeo-Pharyngeal Coordination of the Speaking Voice 142 Chapter 13 - Neuro-Emotional Coordination 151 PART FOUR At last, we come to the singing voice. Much of what you will find in this final part of the book is directed toward dedicated voice teachers, but I hope that if you re a singer, you will tackle even the more technically challenging chapters 14,16 18 when you re able to give them your careful attention. While the terminology may be somewhat daunting at first, you don t have to have an advanced understanding of either anatomy or acoustics to understand what is essential for you here. At the very least, you will get a sense of the wonderful precision that is available to you with regard to vocal production. At the end of Part Four, this book concludes with the case study of a singer and impersonator who is wildly diverse in his professional use of his voice. Summing up highly effective use of the three coordinations, as well as virtuosic use and enjoyment of the voice in both
speaking and singing, he also happens to be a national treasure in Switzerland. XI
Chapter 14 - Exploring Laryngeo-Pharyngeal Coordination in Singing 162 Chapter 15 - A Functional Analysis of Singing Imagery 185 Chapter 16 - Laryngeo-Pharyngeal Coordination in Contemporary Singing 210 Chapter 17 - Testimonials of Contemporary Singers 222 Chapter 18 - Applying Vocal Science: An Interview with Chris Johnson 229 Chapter 19 - Classical Singing 269 Chapter 20 - Testimonials of Classical Singers 281 Chapter 21 - Theme and Variations: Yann Lambiel 294 Conclusion 301 Glossary 302 Bibliography 306 xii
