Zusammenfassung: | "In the years following World War II, the New York intellectuals became some of the most renowned critics and writers in the country. Although mostly male and Jewish, this prominent group also included women and non-Jews. Yet all of its members embraced a secular Jewish machismo that became a defining characteristic of the contemporary experience. Write like a Man examines how the New York intellectuals shared a uniquely American conception of Jewish masculinity that prized verbal confrontation, polemical aggression, and an unflinching style of argumentation. Ronnie Grinberg paints illuminating portraits of figures such as Norman Mailer, Hannah Arendt, Lionel and Diana Trilling, Mary McCarthy, Norman Podhoretz, Midge Decter, and Irving Howe. She describes how their construction of Jewish masculinity helped to propel the American Jew from outsider to insider even as they clashed over its meaning in a deeply anxious project of self-definition. Along the way, Grinberg sheds light on their fraught encounters with the most contentious issues and ideas of the day, from student radicalism and the civil rights movement to feminism, Freudianism, and neoconservatism."-- |

Grinberg Princeton, New Jersey Princeton University Press [2024] xvi, 367 Seiten Illustrationen 25 cm txt rdacontent n rdamedia nc rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references and index Introduction -- My weapon is my pen : constructing secular Jewish masculinity -- "Crazy" and "genteel" : Di and Li Trilling and secular Jewish masculinity -- Jewish cold warriors and "mature" masculinity -- World of our fathers, world of our sons : Irving Howe and Jewish masculinity on the left -- "Lady" critics : women New York intellectuals and feminism -- Midge Decter : the "first lady of neoconservatism" -- "S'Sissy,' the most dreaded epithet of an American boyhood" : Norman Podhoretz and Jewish masculinity on the right -- Epilogue "In the years following World War II, the New York intellectuals became some of the most renowned critics and writers in the country. Along the way, Grinberg sheds light on their fraught encounters with the most contentious issues and ideas of the day, from student radicalism and the civil rights movement to feminism, Freudianism, and neoconservatism."-- Arendt, Hannah 1906-1975 (DE-588)11850391X gnd rswk-swf Trilling, Lionel 1905-1975 (DE-588)118802747 gnd rswk-swf Howe, Irving 1920-1993 (DE-588)120820412 gnd rswk-swf Podhoretz, Norman 1930- (DE-588)119024063 gnd rswk-swf Mailer, Norman 1923-2007 (DE-588)118576461 gnd rswk-swf Trilling, Diana 1905-1996 (DE-588)119191768 gnd rswk-swf McCarthy, Mary 1912-1989 (DE-588)118575686 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Männlichkeit (DE-588)4123701-8 gnd rswk-swf Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 gnd rswk-swf Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 gnd rswk-swf Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 gnd rswk-swf Identität (DE-588)4026482-8 gnd rswk-swf New York, NY (DE-588)4042011-5 gnd rswk-swf Masculinity / Religious aspects / Judaism Jewish critics / New York (State) / New York Jewish men / New York (State) / New York Jews / United States / Attitudes Jews / United States / Intellectual life New York (N.Y.) / Intellectual life Masculinité / Aspect religieux / Judaïsme Critiques juifs / New York (État) / New York Hommes juifs / New York (État) / New York Juifs / États-Unis / Attitudes Juifs / États-Unis / Vie intellectuelle New York, NY (DE-588)4042011-5 g Geistesleben (DE-588)4274490-8 s Intellektueller (DE-588)4027249-7 s Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 s Männlichkeit (DE-588)4123701-8 s Identität (DE-588)4026482-8 s Geschichte z DE-604 Mailer, Norman 1923-2007 (DE-588)118576461 p Arendt, Hannah 1906-1975 (DE-588)11850391X p Trilling, Lionel 1905-1975 (DE-588)118802747 p Trilling, Diana 1905-1996 (DE-588)119191768 p McCarthy, Mary 1912-1989 (DE-588)118575686 p Podhoretz, Norman 1930- (DE-588)119024063 p Howe, Irving 1920-1993 (DE-588)120820412 p Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 978-0-691-25562-0 (DE-604)BV049654098 |
