Image Bite Politics is the first book
m
political
psychology to systematically assess the visual
presentation of presidential candidates in network
news coverage of elections and to connect candidate
portrayals with shifts in public opinion. Although any
number of scholarly books, intellectual treatises, and
campaign histories have analyzed the media s role in
politics, none have explicitly focused on news visuals.
Despite the rise of the Internet, television remains
the dominant news medium, owing to its visual nature
and nearly universal accessibility. While image handlers
have aggressively pursued visual means to shape
voter perceptions of candidates for decades, scientific
evidence regarding the centrality of visuals in shaping
public opinion is just now catching up with political
practice. The neglect of visual analysis has led a number
of scholars to call for more research on the visual
component of television, particularly news coverage
of elections.
Image Bite Politics answers this call, presenting the
results of a comprehensive visual analysis of general
election news from
1992-2004.
Chapters include
theoretical explanations of visual processing and visual
representation as well as empirical analyses of sound
and image bite content, visual bias and visual framing,
and candidate emotionality and nonverbal behavior. The
role of images in shaping citizen perceptions is taken up
in a concluding chapterthat employs the data to predict
fluctuations in public opinion during the campaign.
