Augustus Wollaston Franks

Augustus Wollaston Franks (vor 1897). mini|hochkant|Augustus Wollaston Franks (vor 1897). Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks (geboren am 20. März 1826 in Genf; gestorben am 21. Mai 1897 in London) war ein englischer Altertumsforscher und Mäzen.

Er war von 1866 bis 1896 der erste Kurator der Abteilung für britische Altertümer und Kunstdenkmale des Altertums und des Mittelalters am Britischen Museum in London. In diesen drei Jahrzehnten wurde Franks zu einem der wichtigsten Antiquare und Sammler in der Geschichte des Britischen Museums. Auf seine unermüdliche, leidenschaftliche Sammeltätigkeit für das Britische Museum geht der Erwerb solch außergewöhnlicher Kunstschätze zurück wie das ''Runenkästchen von Auzon'' („Franks Casket“), der Lothar-Kristall und der ''Royal Gold Cup''.
