MARIJA MALBAŠA
CONTRIBUTION TO THE CULTURAL
HISTORY OF OSIJEK.
Extended summary*
1. Marija Malbasa, the first senior librarian in the library of
the Museum of Slavonia in Osijek, is recognised by the cul-
tural and scientific establishment as a person who contributed
to the affirmation of her City Born in Osijek, she is credited
with giving Osijek its middle-Europe economic-and-cuktu-
ral-leadership image commensurate with its title “Tha Capital
of Slavonija”. Her work on the City cultural history especially
on publishing and printing history and bibliographic notes
appearing in Osjecka bibliografija will be eternally remembered
by the Croatian scientific and cultural public. She is a witness
to the European character and importance of Osijek. Osijek
has always been her source, and Vienna, Zagreb, Grenoble
and Paris her European education.225
2. Her professional and scientific effectiveness start to ma-
terialize in the Museum226 where she takes the responsibility

for Library management and restructuring. Very soon this
library’s fundus and professional management go beyond
the status of an auxiliary library and it becomes a Museum
department. At the time it was the largest library in Osijek
and according to Malbasa’s notes of December 31st 1953 it
“had more than forty thousand items situated in five rooms”.
Malbasa writes about the Museum Library in professio-
nal publications of the Society of museum professionals and
conservationists, and of the Croatian Library Association.
She informs the professional public about the history of the
then most important Osijek library, having been assembled
since establishment of the Museum of Slavonia in 1877. The
Museum Library has an extraordinary fundus227 and the he-
merotheque collections.228
In 1954, very enthusiastically Malbaša started interli-
brary exchangeof Osječki zbornik. Apart from Ex-Jugosla-
via (Belgrade, Ljubljana, Sarajevo, Skopje), the interlibrary
exchange mostly took place with German, Austrian, Polish,
Italian, Hungarian and other foreign institutions. In the pe-
riod between 1965 and 1967, Osječki zbornik was exchanged

with 268 institutions in the country and abroad.229 It is easy
to realize Marija Malbaša’s considerable efforts, who was
at that time the only librarian in the Museum library. She
frequently wrote in her log file, besides other tasks, about
distribution of Osječki zbornik. For example, on 20-25 Ja-
nuary 1964 she wrote “(.) Further distribution of Osječki
zbornik and correspondence related to it”. This international
exchange very quickly promoted the Museum at the local
and international level of knowledge exchange.230
Diversity of Malbaša’s library tasks in the Museum library
was witnessed by her Log File which is today stored in the
Museum archive.
In fact, at the beginning of the 60s last century there was
an attempt in the libraries to reward staff according to results
by adopting new reward regulations which required from
emplyees to keep appropriate work documentation.231
As an excellent bookexpert, Malbaša used to organize
exhibitions, all by herself or in cooperation with her colle-

agues from the Museum, the City Library Osijek and other
institutions. She always intended to present the existing li-
brary collections in the thematic exhibitions, but also partici-
pated in the Museum’s projects presenting museum collec-
tions.232
3. Croatian Library Association Osijek was established in
1951 and till its reorganization in 1967, Marija Malbasa was
the Association commissioner. In that period, she was also
the secretary as well as a treasurer, and reported regularly on
her work to the Association board. At that time, Osijek was
a cultural centre of the Eastern Croatia and had three libra-
ries of a greate importance: the library of the Museum of
Slavonia, the City Library and the library of the Local Union
Council. Therefore it was anticipated by the Library Associa-
tion board in Zagreb that there would be more staff engaged
in the activities of the Osijek Library Association. Also, it was
expected that the Museum library, as the most important li-
brary in the eastern part of our Republic and the promoter of
library organization interests, would have a role that corre-
ssponds to its tasks.
Marija Malbasa was a respectable representative of the
librarians in Osijek, at the beginning as the only librari-
an, and since 1962 as the only senior librarian. Also in that

year, university faculty libraries were mentioned for the first
time, since that period was known for the establishing of the
higher education institutions.
At the annual assembly of the Croatian Library Associa-
tion Osijek, in 1962, it was concluded that the Association
memebers should visit university faculty and high school
libraries to learn about the way they work and about their
library collections for the purpose of better cooperation.
Malbasa started many activities (lectures, exhibitions and
other) in which actively participated the Board members of
the Osijek Association. We shouldn’t forget that that was the
time when the Association had a task to encourage professio-
nal education of its members, as well as including them into
different cultural and educational activities.
Librarians from other bigger Slavonian towns were di-
rectly the members of the Croatian Library Association Za-
greb, so that the well-conceived concept of the regional orga-
nization was realized only in the 2nd half of the 20th century,
in 1975, by establishing the Library Association of Slavonia
and Baranya (without Slavonski Brod) and based in Osijek.
Except her membership and participation in the Library
Association, Marija Malbasa was also active in the Friends
of Antiquities Association “Mursa” in Osijek, the branch of
the Museum-conservation employees Association. In 1962,
by establishing Matica hrvatska in Osijek, Malbasa started to
participate in the work of this oldest Croatian cultural insti-
tution which declared her its honorable honorary member.
4. The collection of the Library Museum of Osijek iz a
professional/scientific stronghold for Marija Malbasa. Re-
search about Osijeks publishing service for Malbasa wasn’t
just a project assignment, in her words it was “an emotional
bondage with books”.

Osijek publishing was immensely written about. In the
first issue of Osječki zbornik there was a column by dr. Josip
Boesendorfera: Divaldiana u Osijeku, a list containing the
names of all the books and editions printed by the famous
Osijek printers throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
Osječki zbornik by the Museum of Slavonia started be-
ing published in the year 1942 and created by dr. Josip Boe-
sendorfer who was the supervisor of the National Museum.
That was the first scientific contribution of the Museum
professionals and the permanent outside associates.233 Osječ-
ki zbornik was valued in professional circles as a significant
publication for research purposes.
The work evaluations made by Dr Danica Pinterović for
the year 1955 and 1956 tell us about Malbasa’s engagement
in professional associations, but also about a successful de-
velopment in her profession stating “(.) developing into a
great librarian, bibliophile and bibliographer where she is
helped by her knowledge of several European languages. As
a librarian she skillfully handles not only museum-conserva-
tion professions but also the ones outside that circle. (.).234”
Her creative charge together with invitations and encou-
ragement from her associates for research on publishing
have paid off The invitations and encouragement from her
associates helped her release her capital works. She publis-
hed more papers on publishing in Osječki zbornici which
include the period from the oldest Osijek printers of the
middle of the 18th century up to the 70s of the 20th century.
In the year 1978 (ten years after her retirement) her first
book Povijest tiskarstva u Slavoniji was printed. The work

on preparing the book began in the year 1967 on suggesti-
on and encouragement from the president of the Croatian
Library Association Dr Aleksandar Stipčević. After that she
continued the preparations as well as printing Osječka bi-
bliografija in two volumes with wholehearted support from
the Centre for Scientific Work the Croatian Academy of Sci-
ences and Arts Osijek and Dr Aleksandar Stipčević, the re-
viewer of Osječka bibliografija.
The most productive period of her intellectual-scientific
creativity coincides with her librarian work in the Museum
and with co-operating with the Yugoslavian Academy of Sci-
ences and Arts Center Osijek, when her longtime persever-
ing work produced editions that make her recognizable in
the professional and scientific circles. In the second half of
the 20th century Osijek got two important scientific-educa-
tive and research institutions: the Center for scientific work
of Yugoslavian Academy of Sciences and Arts (now Croa-
tian Academy Osijek) in the year 1974 and University of
Osijek (now University of J. J Strossmayer Osijek) in the
year 1975.235
Expert associates, retired workers of the Museum, Marija
Malbaša and Dr Danica Pinterović get their own rooms in
the Center for Scientific Work in which they spent a good
deal of their time working on their projects:

volume(1981) and 2nd(1985).237 Therefore Marija Malbaša
published her capital work after entering the retirement.
Marija Malbaša, the higher librarian in Osijek238 and Cro-
atia, had an excellent knowledge, she was educated and polite
- she was a person worthy of respect. We called her “profe-
ssor Malbaša”, because she truly was the first professor in
Osijek who acquired the title “Higher librarian”, the first
appointed commissioner of the Croatian Library Association
and the first citizen of Osijek to win the Char-
ter. In the year of her retirement (1968) she won the newly
established Kukuljevic’s Charter, the biggest recognition in the
librarian profession, by the Croatian Library Association and
together with the biggest names in Croatian librarianship at
that time: Eva Verona, Matko Rojnic, Branko Hergešic and
others. Without naming other recognitions, we underline
that she became a honorary member of the branch of Matica
hrvatska Osijek on the Reformation assembly of Matica hr-
vatska Osijek in the year 1990.
Instead of conclusion
Marija Malbaša passed away in January 26, 1995, silently,
without great pomp. Professor Marijanović wrote “She died

was one among many trips and visits to the libraries in Vienna. I will
never forget how she, smiling politely, corrected the host in the National
Library in Vienna who was convinced that those librarians came from
Slovenia and not from Slavonia. This vital 70 year old didn’t show tired-
ness and excatly that period was the period of her most productive work
and the period of publishing Povijest tiskarstva u Slavoniji (1978) and Osječka
bibliografija (1981; 1985).
