Choreography of Music in the Light of
Postmodernism on the Basis of Chosen Musical Works
The main objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of transferring
polystylistic musical work written in the spirit of postmodernism into the dimension of
the stage space by movement means in composition of spatial-movement in accor¬
dance to the principles based on
Emil
Jaques-Dalcroze s rhythmics. The creative
process of work on the interpretation explored the issues of possibilities of staging in¬
terpretation and skills of performance, including issues of movement techniques, shap¬
ing of movement, movement s phrasing, stage expression of music through movement,
and above all it shows how to emphasize the stylistic features associated with the se¬
lected culturally-rooted conventions.
The ambiguity of the structure of the postmodern piece of music work suggests
a broader range of references, which on the one hand gives us greater freedom of
interpretation, on the other hand requires a broader view and deeper knowledge and
ability of choice, so as to create synthetic and coherent entity. As it relates to a complex,
multilayered and ambiguous musical and cultural phenomena of era of postmodernism,
so in the theoretical part of this dissertation (CHAPTER
1)
it was decided to discuss
them. Paraphrasing the words of Paul Ricoeur, it can be said that postmodernism aims
at finding meaning through apparent rejection of rationality. Thus, breaking the con¬
vention, through irony and only seemingly carefree casual game, gives us here
a possibility to emerge characters new meanings, more ambiguous and multilayer
coded. Postmodernism is characterized by a specific approach to the material, both in
the
microscale
(including the smallest particles
-
to create a new language) and macro-
scale (whole pieces of material
-
conventions, phrases) and treating them equally, as
a new substance
-
because it is a new context, a new experience, a new entity for
a creator, for a recipient. Being read and interpreted anew, according to a new key.
Under these conditions, rhythmic method seems to provide excellent conditions
for the development of postmodern art, because it allows for individual and creative
experience of music in personal contact with a piece of art
-
in the interaction with the
piece of art. Rhythmics is a developing and open method, which allows us to interpret
the works of various periods in the context of their cultural background (CHAPTER
2).
From the polystylistics and surconventionalism perspective a short characteriza¬
tion of movement convention was written, resulting in a selection of dance styles
such as Italian Renaissance dance, baroque dance, classical ballet and post modern
dance. Music choreography refers to specific steps, figures, floor patterns, movement
techniques, aesthetics and performing manners of these conventions of dance. At the
same time it should be emphasized that the borrowings were not intended to form the
choreography of the dance steps or its components, but to treat them as a starting ma¬
terial to create
pseudo
phrases suggesting a certain convention by demonstrating some
of the characteristics of the style or aesthetics.

To illustrate the polystylistic problem understood as a discourse with the past
the following pieces have been selected: Quasi Una Sinfonietta by Paul Szymanski,
and

Such a choice of musical exam¬
ples shows the possibilities of interoretation, referring to the conventions and styles of
different epochs. The movement transcription of a variety of music phenomena in¬
cludes: heterophony, an baroque sophisticated form, typical dialogue of the soloist
with the orchestra, the virtuoso solo show, a never-ending final cadence, modern clus¬
ters of sounds with specific color, delicate and sophisticated glissandos, minimalistic
and abstract alienated individual sounds and the segment construction. In the creative
process of interpretation question about the choice of means of musical expression of
movement in the music choreography of selected works arise.
Creating movement composition within the polystylistic work affects extension
of opportunities for performing skills, develops sensitivity to various styles and aesthet¬
ics, combined with the movement technique and adequate kind of expression. Move¬
ment realization of polystylistic music work, force us to overcome our movement
habits and patterns, allowing the development of movement abilities since it obliges us
to explore different techniques
-
not by mindless copying, but by their creative explo¬
ration, being simultaneously motivation for their analysis and understanding. In this
way it allows us to go beyond the schematic poses, steps, developing the plasticity of
the body and deepening movement creativity. Movement realization of polystylistic
music makes us reflect on the smallest elements of the motion particle and body mo-
toric, so as to deconstruct movement habits and consciously construct different
( new ) movement language
-
as it is in music or literature. Such process of creation
is conducted in multi-level reality, ranging from the smallest particles of syntax of
movement language through their confrontation with the form-creating element to the
synthesis of the entire of the piece of art. It enables us to develop kinesthetic awareness.
Movement realization of postmodern music inspires us to explore the opportuni¬
ties offered by the stage dimension, light and costume seen as a material to be shaped.
Work on polystylistic choreography of music requiring the transposition of music con¬
vention into the stage convention broadens and updates perspective of issues including
means of movement, body expression, movement techniques, means of performance.
It lets us to develop both performing and interpretative skills the very notion of con¬
vention develops the spectrum of perception of the musical work itself.
