Summary
The history of the National Camp in 1928 — 1939
in Lublin Voivodeship
The history of the National Camp in 1928 — 1939 in Lublin Voivodeship
has never been testify and describe as a whole. Some time ago Professor Ewa
Maj from UMCS published a book about a 1918 — 1928 period. The National
Camp also known as the National Democracy, descend from the Polish League
established by Zygmunt Miłkowski in 1887, which was transformed into
National League in 1893 by Roman Dmowski, Zygmunt Balicki and Jan
Ludwik Popławski. Main principle of the nationalists’ programme was
a postulate of national and social solidarity which means consensus between
interests of the all Polish people regardless of social and professional status.
My doctoral thesis include 1928 — 1939 period. Year 1928 was very
important in the history of the polish national camp. Activity of the National
League was terminated and the National Peasant Union was defeated in
general election. The National Party replaced the National Peasant Union and
became the largest opposition party to Sanation government. The beginning
of the Second World War comprise final caesura of my doctoral thesis. Period
of time described in my thesis include span of governance after the May Coup
where Józef Pilsudski’s followers hold an autoritharian office.
According to the territory side my thesis include the administrative area of
Lublin Voivodeship, which in the Second Polish Republic consist of 19
counties, 277 communes, 33 cities, 4 779 villages and was inhabited by
2 400 000 habitants.
In my thesis I used many sources, mainly archival and press, diaries and
brochure of the national camp. Monograph is mainly based on materials stored
in the State Archive in Lublin. I also used materials from the State Archive in
Siedlce and the State Archive of the Capital City of Warsaw Branch in Otwock,
Archives of the Institute for National Remembrance in Lublin and Warsaw,
Archives of New Records of Warsaw and library of the Polish Academy of

Sciences in Krakow. Most of materials was published by the government
administration on the basis of police reports, but the last two institutions stored
also materials created by activists of the national camp.
Press is a valuable historical source. During the Second Polish Republic
press was the most important way of communication with electorate and
society for the national democrats as well as for the representatives of other
political parties. The Lublin Voice edited in Lublin was the main press source
of my thesis. It was a national — democratic daily, which had information and
ideological feature. Podlasiak, firstly edited in Biała Podlaska and from 1932
in Siedlce, had a similar role in Podlasie Region. Many other ideological
materials of the national camp edited in Warsaw and other cities was used in
my thesis. I used 37 press titles. Not many preserved memories, books and
propaganda brochures of the national camp’s politicians completed source
enquiry. I also used statistical sources and more than 200 books and scientific
publications concerned with the history and ideology of the National
Democracy, political idea of the Second Polish Republic and the history of
the Lublin Region. Divergence between information included in sources made
to comparative analyse and assessing of reliability of sources.
My thesis consists of four chapters. In the first chapter leaders of the
Lublin’s National — Democrats and the situation of the national camp in
Poland and Lublin Region before 1928 were described, underlining demo-
graphic and social character of the region. Main purpose of the chapter was
pointing out origins of the polish national movement and showing the most
important idea propositions.
Next chapters are based on the chronological and problem order. Time
period was determined by important political events in Poland (next general
election, new constitution) which influenced the activity of the national camp
and its transformations and changes in the National Democracy itself. Second
chapter concerned the period 1928 — 1930. In 1928 the National Peasant
Union was defeated in general election. As an effect of that event the union
was dissolved and the National Party was established. The young nationalists
didn’t take part in polictical activity because they acted in the Camp of Great
Poland. The main aim of the Camp of Great Poland was political education of
the young generation to future political activity. End of the chapter describe
election campaign and analysis of the results of general election in November
1930.
Third chapter include 1931 — 1934 period, when young nationalists
compete with the older politicians for leadership in the national camp. When

authorities dissolved the Camp of Great Poland the young signed up the
National Party and established the Young Sections but conflicts became bigger
and some soon established new political organisations: the National Radical
Camp and the Youth Nationalist Union. Fourth chapter begins in 1935 and
ends in 1939 when Second World War began. In that period of time the national
camp was divided. Apart from the National Party there were also some small
nationalist organisations. In 1935 the National Party as well as the other
opposition parties boycotted general election.
In each chapter I described activity of the National Party and presented the
history of other social organisations cooperating with that Party e.g. The
Academic Union ‘All-Polish Youth’, the National Women Organisation, the
Gymnastic Society ‘Falcon’, the Trade Union ‘Praca Polska’, the Polish
Educational Society and many others: sociable, disputable clubs, educational,
industrial, agricultural, artisan and the first world war veteran unions. I have
also described a role of the National Democracy sympathizers in local
authorities.
Lublin Voivodeship wasn’t a good place for activity of nationalists due to
its social and national structure. Radical peasant’s movement, socialists and
communists had a strong influence in Lublin Region. The other reason was,
in comparison with other voivodeships, percentage of national minorities
especially the Jewish one. Importance of nationalists in Lublin Voivodeship
was weak in comparison to western Poland. Although many problems, strong
involvement in social life of nationalists in Lublin Voivodeship gave them
position one of the greatest political parties in region. Establishing of many
sociable, educational, cultural, industrial, agricultural and intellectual organ-
isations strenghten nationalists. Nationalist’s leaders were good prepared,
claimed slogans about national solidarity, offered many to all classes and social
groups, gave them stable position in political map of Lublin Region.
