SUMMARY
Sędziszów Małopolski is located in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, 25 kilome-
tres west of Rzeszów - the region’s capital. It is the seat of Commune, an admin-
istrative unit comprising the town and fourteen villages. The Communes entire
area of 154 km2 has a population of 23,000, including nearly 7,500 residents in
the town itself.
Sędziszów Małopolski has excellent road links with major economic cen-
tres and regions of Poland. The commune is located along international road
No. 4, as well as A4 motorway, and E-30 railway line, part of Pan-European
Corridor III linking Germany, Poland and Ukraine. Located only 40 kilometres
away, Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport provides numerous connections with a number
of cities throughout Europe.
The earliest references to Sędziszów date from the 1300s, and in 1483 the
settlement received municipal rights. Throughout the seven centuries of its his-
tory the town was owned by families of Odrowąż, Tarnowski, Kostka, Ligęza,
Potocki, ranking among the most distinguished Polish nobility. The oldest and
most valuable landmarks here include: the 17th century Town Hall, the parish
Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary erected in 1694-99 and the
Capuchin Monastery founded in 1739.
Sędziszów suffered immense loss during the First and Second World
War. Many buildings were destroyed. In 1942 the Nazis slaughtered here ap-
proximately 400 Jewish people. Today the Commune of Sędziszów Małopolski
is both an industrial and agricultural area with more than one thousand busi-
ness entities. The major companies, located in the town, include: Hispano-Suiza
Polska, aerospace company; PAGED Rzeszowskie Fabryki Mebli S.A. - manu-
facturer of excellent furniture highly recognized in Poland and abroad; Filter
Factory PZL-Sędziszów S.A. - a leading Polish manufacturer of automotive and
hydraulic filters; Extrans, Zbigniew Szeliga ֊ shipping company; Creuzet Pol-
ska ֊ aerospace company; ARRIVA, branch in Sędziszów Małopolski ֊ ship-
ping company, Ultratech ֊ aerospace company; Gumat ֊ manufacturer of ring
gaskets and seals used in construction, automotive and many other industries;
Samopomoc Chłopska Local Cooperative. Hispano-Suiza Polska, Creuzet Pol-
ska, Ultratech as well as Filter Factory PZL-Sędziszów are members of Aviation

Valley Association, Companies of greatest importance located outside the town
include: Kruszgeo Aggregate Excavation Plant in Czarna Sędziszowska; natural
gas extraction plant in Krzywa and Agricultural Farm in Góra Ropczycka.
Within the town and the commune there are two secondary and three
middle schools, fourteen elementary schools and four kindergartens. Sędziszów
is home to Saint Father Pio Hospital, comprising an internal medicine ward,
neurology ward, elective surgery unit, as well as a Nursing Home. Additionally,
the local branch of the Polish Association for Persons with Mental Disabilities
in its headquarters conducts classes and activities, and provides various kinds
of support for people with special needs. Within the commune, in the village of
Ruda there is a Nursing Home with places for a few dozen residents.
The heart of the local cultural life is the Municipal and Communal Cul-
ture Centre with a number of artistic groups: Rochy Song and Dance Ensemble,
Blues Stage Dance Group, Sędziszek Youth Theatre, and Paka Sędzisza Street
Band.
In Sędziszów there are three sports clubs, i.e. Lechia, established in 1914,
and conducting football and weightlifting sections, as well as two volleyball
clubs: Tęcza and Marba.
The Commune of Sędziszów Małopolski stands out for unique scenic and
natural qualities as a result of its location along the border of two major geo-
graphical units: the Sandomierska Valley and the Foothills. The south mainly
features submontane landscapes, with numerous gorges, valleys and ravines. Ar-
eas to the north of the town are surrounded with pine forests.
Along the nearby Tuszymka River we can encounter artificial lakes which
are used for recreational purposes. The area holds a number of leisure centres
with accommodation facilities. These are eagerly used for weekend breaks by
nearby residents. Those fond of active recreation can also enjoy 150 kilometres
of cycling trails delineated around the town.
Sędziszów Małopolski is growing rapidly thanks to subsidies obtained
from the European Union; these we used for such purposes as construction of
sewage system and treatment plant, water supply system, and modernization of
sports and educational facilities.
